Are you a male age 17-49 or if you have been in the regular military age 17-65?
Are you a female in the national guard?
Are you a US citizen or declared you want to be one?
You have no choice, you are in a militia no matter what you do.
10 USC 311
(a) The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard.
(b) The classes of the militia are—
(1) the organized militia, which consists of the National Guard and the Naval Militia; and
(2) the unorganized militia, which consists of the members of the militia who are not members of the National Guard or the Naval Militia.
The "women in the national guard" was added during Clintons administration. The classes of the militia were added during Baby Bush's administration. Note how "organized militia" is the national guard, but women in the national guard was listed separately. Almost as if it was a hatchet job to make this distinction to match 2nd amendment wording (maybe I am reading too much into this).
Now look at how the national guard is overseas fighting as part of an invading army. Calling a duck a pig does not make it one.
Regardless most people are militia members like it or not

You also have ammo to use anytime someone suggests that "militia" is an evil thing and all militia members should be arrested just for being in a militia. Many people today seem to use the word without knowing what it actually means.
Who are the militia? Are they not ourselves? Is it feared, then, that we shall turn our arms each man gainst his own bosom. Congress have no power to disarm the militia. Their swords, and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birthright of an American...[T]he unlimited power of the sword is not in the hands of either the federal or state governments, but, where I trust in God it will ever remain, in the hands of the people.

“I ask, sir, what is the militia? It is the whole people, except for a few public officials.” — George Mason, in Debates in Virginia Convention on Ratification of the Constitution, Elliot, Vol. 3, June 16, 1788
I actually support raising the militia activity and lowering the standing army levels, once we are no longer at war. The Swiss model served them well for a long time, have the people armed and trained to provide civil defence. This lowers the tax burden people would have to pay as well.
