Fayetteville Food Drive and Cookout - MARCH 13

Postby magdelaina » Mon Mar 01, 2010 12:07 pm

Pre-Script: A preliminary test of door-to-door food driving on 2/19 indicated a potential of 30+lbs of food for 1 hour of collection, with a 100% donation rate for at home families.

I suggest meeting #2 be held the second weekend of March, hopefully under pleasant weather conditions, at Gulley Park in Fayetteville. We can start out with some down time with each other and a grill, then split up a map and go collect donations from the neighborhood. The test was done on Kantz Ln, just a couple of blocks from the park, so maybe the response will be as positive. Then we can regroup, and tally the spoils. Open to all, and friends of all.

How sounds it?

Edit: We have Chapter App, btw!

I will attempt to make it again. Hopefully things will work out better. I live right over by Gully park so getting there shouldn't be a problem. :D

Just found out that the rugby team I play for has scheduled a last minute game against JBU. I play for the local mens team. We are the Arkansas Gryphons. I am one of the founders. We are currently 1st in our division and we are on a run to try and go to nationals.

Our game will be at Walker Park at 2:00 if anyone can make it. If you do show up I am easy to find, I am the big balding guy with the #1 on his jersey.

Sorry about having to miss the meeting. I may send an e-mail out to the rugby team and tell them to bring me canned goods so that I can at least help collect donations for the group. You know I think I will do that, I may even send an e-mail out here at work too.

Hope to see/meet you guys soon.

There is some construction still going Gulley Park that may prohibit walking from one side of the park to the other, so plan to park off of Old Wire Rd, not off of Township St. Below is a map, with the park inside a red box, and a sattilite view of the park itsself. The sattilite image of the park shows the parking lot (A), and the meeting locations (B, C) under consideration. Both spots are visible from the parking lot. We will aim for the picnic area (B), and go to the pavillion (C) if that is taken. Since we are only expecting around 10 people, I didn't want to take up the pavillion unless we have to. I'll be there for set up and grill starting at about 10:00.

I suggest we do lunch potluck style, at approximately 11:30. Coals, burger patties, and and potato salad are spoken for. Pick and post an item or dish. Also, bring a camp/lawn chair if you'd like. If you plan to bring tag alongs, let everyone know in advance so we know how many to feed.

After lunch (around 12:30), I'll pass out route info and log sheets on clip boards and we can split up into teams, and pick streets. After collecting donations, we can regroup at the park (14:00-15:00) to find out how well we've done! I'll bring the chapter application along, and we can get it filled out too, so bring your ZS card if you're a carrier. The only things you'll really need to bring for the collection are strong tote bags if you have them, yourself, and walking shoes. I think we can expect to be done by 17:00.

I don't have to be at the field until 11:00 so I will try to stop by and meet some of you guys at 10:00. I applied for a card a while back but I have not heard anything on it at all.

Since the forecast isn't promising, and three people that would like to attend are tied up, we should probably reschedule. Food collection would be much easier (and consequently more productive) with a large, dry group of volunteers.

I'll PM and phone/txt anyone thats expressed an interest in participating tomorrow.

What are some alternative dates that work well for everyone? We're looking at serving lunch at Seven Hills on the 20th, so the next available weekend would be the 26th-28th. Or if not a weekend, when?

Well if anyone is looking for something to do the rugby game will still go on as planned. It will be at Walker Park in south Fayetteville.

I will be tied up every weekend until the third weekend of April. However I will be collecting from the rugby team and people from work.

See you all soon.

Agreed! Who here likes to hike?

I'm totally down for a hike. Do you have any good places? I usually only go to Hobbs State Park and hike there, but I'm open for other locations.

Have you hiked the Butterfield Trail at Devil's Den? It's 15 miles, and a loop, so you don't see the same scenery twice. There's a couple nice camp sites on the trail, and a really good swimming hole.

That sounds like fun, and it's close. Would give us all a chance to use our bug out gear and what not.

I'd most likely be down for some hiking and camping with local ZSers, especially the Butterfield Trail. I've been itching to go, but my "car camping" buddies seem a bit hesitant at the thought of having to lug their gear.

And I've never been there personally, but I hear there's also a decent 15-ish mile (actually ~7 in, 7 out; goes out to the Illinois River and back) trail at Lake Wedington out west of Fayetteville.
