Man what a bang to end the run on. (This statement is contingent on no one else entering in the next few hours, but still...) Excellent kits from DS, Murph, and Paragon!

There are some really outstanding kits on here. The best part is they're all well thought out, capable, and all well within the the means of everyone here to create using little pieces of each.

I am SOOOO glad that I don't have to be a judge on this one. :D

LOL, I almost hope it's fixed. I know I'd have a hard time judging them too!

There's a ton of ideas I've see on this thread that I really like. Everyone did a great job.

So much so that I'm going to donate one Metal Signal Mirror (that you see in my kit) to the prize pool. It's as thin and light as a credit card, so I've actualy started carrying one in my wallet too. If anyone else is interested in one, I have a few more that I could sell for $5/each.

i was hoping "March 8th" was the last day to add kits. is it too late to add? no big deal if it is :) especially after looking over some of the other crushing entries.

nice kits zs'ers!!!

Looks like I'm gonna miss the deadline as the soonest I'll be able to post my entry is tomorrow as I'm having camera problems again (my camera and my computer hate each other I think) and I can't list the items as they're packed and I didn't write them down (I'd hate to claim something that isn't in there)

*Edit* And now I have to go and deal with some real life

Necrodamus-LED & a sharpener
murph-mirror
elkhills-ZS patch, maybe some other stuff- lemme see what I can find :D
I think I remember some others, but I don't wanna put anybody on the spot.

I feel pretty strongly that everyone on ZS should have a 4-way silcock key in their kit, so I'll throw a new one into the prize pool. I'm pretty sure that Ironraven already carries one, so if he wins we'll work out a suitable alternative.

Maybe if we get enough stuff, we could spread the prizes out to a number of winners.

LOL In a large enough kit, yes.

On a more serious note, is there way to print the whole thread in one long view? LOTS and LOTS of mineable stuff here.

it has been brought to my attention that my kit does not fit within the rules of the competition, and it does in fact violate rule #5....i knew that when i posted my kit.

thats why i said this...
i have a few things hanging off of the pouch, and i may have stepped oustide of the rules a bit here, and if i dont make the top 20, or if i dont win because of this its ok with me. this was a chance to build a kit i needed, and it was FUN!

it has also been brought to my attention that i may change my entry up untill the deadline, and i have been encouraged to do so....but im not going to.

the OP said this about the contest....
The one thing we do not want to do is stifle creativity!
so, as i mentioned in my post that this gave me the oppertunity to build a kit i needed, but also gave me some guidlines to follow along the way. thank god because i could hang a hole lot of shit off of that dump pouch. BUT the other thing it did was let me get creative. :D. if somebody copies something from my kit, or if it helps somebody build a kit from the ground up then im a winner twice. i have a kit i needed, and i helped somebody....after all ZS is about helping others. ( i promised myself i wouldnt cry   )

so at this time i will disqualify my non conforming MPSK kit from the competition. i will leave it posted up so that in a year from now when some newb bumps this thread back into the rotation i can sit back and remember the day i broke all the rules!!!!!....... FTW! 8)

good luck to the rest of you! :D

Hi all,

I've been lurking here for a long time, wanting to contribute and this seemed like a great time.

I believe the best survival pouch is one that is designed for the crisis you are most likely to find yourself in, there is no best survival pouch for all situations. With that in mind, let me tell you about me and my kit.

I generally do long solo day hikes 6-8 hours in hot, dry environments, primarily the Ojito Wilderness in New Mexico. There are no trails or cell phone coverage. There are are lots of places to fall off and into as well as a really lot of rattlesnakes to surprise. There are also bear and mountain lion but they generally leave you alone.

I leave detailed topographic maps of where I will be hiking along with contact information for Search and Rescue as well as time to call if I haven't made contact. I should be rescued within 24 hours assuming I have not died in the mean time. I believe I am most likely to be incapacitated by either a snake bite or a strained/broken ankle/leg. If I am near my pack, I will have much more resources. This pouch is designed to always be on my person and with the thought that I will be unable to reach my pack for some reason and must survive at least the night until rescue.

I have been greatly influenced by Cody Lundin's book, 98.5 degrees, and recommend it to anyone.

So here is my kit....

This fits into a Maxpedition Mini Rolly-Poly and is worn on a belt.
900 ml titanium cook pot.
Adventure Medical Kits Heatsheets Emergency Bivy (much better than an emergency blanket and well worth the money if you need it have to use it)
2 x 55 gallon contractor trash bags
Warm cap in a ziploc bag (my wife won't let me use the food vacuum machine on it yet, but that's a great idea)
Cheap, adjustable lighter
Coughlan signal mirror
Fresnel lens (for fire starting as well as looking at small things)
Iodine water purification tablets
Petzl LED head lamp
Unwaxed dental floss (50 yards of cordage)
Leatherman Juice S2 multitool
6x alcohol pads (for cleaning but better for fire starting)
2 dice to pass the time
Instructions for the Catholic Rosary for meditation
Emergency whistle and Windmill Trekker lighter are attached to the outside of the Mini Rolly-Poly.
This is my submission, all feedback is appreciated.

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af2 ... ZSkit1.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

On the other side of my belt just so you know this isn't all that I carry, is a SOG Seal 2000 knife, the sheath is wrapped with 50 yards of 550 paracord and 25 yards of duct tape. In the small compartment under the paracord is another adjustable lighter and 10 feet of wire. Attached to the sheath is a magnesium fire starter and a Smith's knife sharpener.

http://i1008.photobucket.com/albums/af2 ... ZSkit2.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Thanks for the great contest and the great ideas.

Mag Pouch Survival Kit Contest

Post by 6UNF1GHTER » Mon Mar 08, 2010 10:31 pm

THERE IS STILL TIME LEFT TO POST YOUR ENTRY!
DEADLINE IS 11:59.59 Pacific Standard Time (GMT -8:00)

BTT
And no, I'm not gonna post last second. I'm opting out of entry since I'm not prepared... (professional procrastinator here)

So, show 'em if you got them.

DesertErn - I tried to link them into the forum for you, but you've got them saved mega huge (more than 850pixels tall), if you can save them as an 800x600 or 1024x768 they'll merge in with the IMG tag.

DS - If you got rid of the battery pack, your kit would be GTG IMO, I think the unwritten sentiment was to keep the "pouch" effect to a minimum, and having more than one additional item/pouch attached to the kit was the foul line. I say cram the batt's in the kit and rock on!
