I think surviving a headshot with a bullet is more of an exception then a rule. No tactic or plan is going to be a 100% death 0% survival rate. I think though that it is safe to assume that a bullet in the brain is the most universally effective and safe means of disposing of the living dead. As far as melee combat is concerned, I would throw out any notions of going toe-to-toe with one. The increased risk of infection is too high to risk. As for weapon selection for possible close quarter incounter discount anything too bulky that you can't swing twice in row relativly quickly.
When I was training muay thai, my trainer told me sparing was the most important part even though a heavy bag was a good training tool. "you'll never fight someone kind enough to hang from the ceiling swinging back and forth" he said. Now while I'm not encouraging you to go spare with with your friend with bats and hammers, what I'm saying is yes a sledge hammer, axe, etc would be effective, but only against something still. And they're damn heavy and difficult to weild even if you're strong. I would go with something light heavy and blunt, preferably short enough to carry comfortably and swing effectivly, but long enough to maintain some distance (ie: a thick walled steel pipe, crow bar, pry bar, axe or sledge handle, maybe even a shorter handle masonry hammer). Stabbing since a bit out of the question too as that requires a lot of accuracy, which most of us don't posses, plus there is a big chance of sticking your blade in a head only be unable to get it out (serations suck). As for the the devoted kantana to the head crowd, sorry but coming from a farmer boy who slaughters every year I can tell you, it aint as easy as you think to cut through bone, even with a razor sharp heavy blade with a strong man behind it. Just my two cents though. Take it for what its worth. My rule of them, keep the distance high and the bullets flying.

I'm agreeing 100% with DOOMCREW. You put a bullet in ANYTHING'S head and it will usually go down. For every story about a human being walking around with a major wound to their head, there is like 1000 stories of people that got dropped with merely a stiff blow to the head.

and I haven't heard a story yet about anybody taking 2 bullets to the brainpan and still moving around. If you're a good shot with rifle or pistol, I'd suggest aiming for the top lip. Especially with a rifle. Straight on past that lip is the spine and the cerebellum. Bust that area up with some frangible or hollowpoint ammo and I doubt the zombie would be able to move, regardless of condition. A perfect triangle to aim for seems to be between the eyes and the middle of the bottom lip. That triangle seems to be the perfect "KILLSHOT" area. anybody else have any thoughts?

For a melee weapon, I wouldn't bother with a knife, dagger, or small machete. That'd be good for slicing a bicep or quadricep to help slow a Z down, but if i want to put something down with one shot, recover, and take another down, I'd go with the good old fashion splitting maul. If anybody here has split firewood, they know its basically a sledgehammer with a wedged end.

As for hand-2-hand,.. i KNOW that its a bad idea. DUH! BUT if you're stranded, out of shells, your knife is stuck in some Z's skull, and a half dozen more are shambling down the hallway, you might as well slip on a pair of thick leather gloves and go to work. Knock as many of them down as you can and keep as much momentum up as possible. If you have to,.. it is possible to break a neck with your bare hands. Especially if you have been trained to do so. I wouldn't suggest locking horns with the undead, but if i was cornered, id go down kicking and gouging. An eyeless zombie isnt going to too much of a threat to anybody.

The way i see it, the people who survive wounds to the head or brain survive because the damage done is relatively minor. With zombies, they seem to fully run off of the brain, and not the heart or the lungs, so they can survive a lot more. The way i see it, the cerebral cortex (the outer layer of the brain) dies, or is damaged during death, leaving the brain stem to run the body. Since the brain stem is at the base of the brain and in the over-all middle of it, it's harder to get to.
