Most likely bulk application and shipping issues. Plus after the first time your youngest goes into the storage and gets into the honey (we where storing it in the containers from the store) The idea of powdered sweetener sounds good.

http://www.bellplantation.com/index.php ... &Itemid=29

Peanut butter does have a shelf life we've never reached it but then we can only hold so much food in our place. The powdered stuff lasts longer.

Well the honey hunks is actually pretty cool, lol I thought you were screwing around when you said powdered honey.

I can see using it in my trail bread mixes. I like to mix up all my dry ingredients in one bag to prevent bulk, and I also like to use honey rather than plain sugar in them, but I often settle for dry sugar or no sweetener at all (I often add berries or something anyway) because I don't feel like fucking with a bottle of honey in my pack or the little packets from chick-fil-a. This could cut that problem out completely. Powdered peanut butter might go good in there too, after all I often end up adding peanuts to the dough or spreading peanut butter on the bread when I eat it, same thing right?

ETA: ahh fuck it Huny Hunks is like twice as expensive as buying regular local honey, not to mention the potential problem of getting it shipped down here from Canada. If I happen to come across some at a health food store or something though...

248 votes so far but only 9 on easy cheese. I know ZS has a geography-based approach to chapters, but maybe there's room for a cheese chapter. More votes for weightgainer supplements coming online. I wish I hadn't already spent my October allotment of money on equipment or I'd buy the powdered honey just to see what it tastes like and how it works as a sugar substitute, etc.

Thanks for the bacon link. After reading that, I suppose it's not all that different from the animal jerky products (which have a lot of votes so far) or bacon bits. The problem I have with animal jerky is that, if things get really bad, you'd be eating and curing your own jerky eventually. As such, I guess I see that as not being good bug out food... too grim and sober.

Thanks for the links I've never actually seen a recipe for salt cured bacon. Now I just need the land to raise some pigs and I've got a way to length the time between slaughter and consumption. The freezer an option but power outages happen and there are more to come.

Now that is interesting it's about the same price for me, course I live in Canada. We for some reason have honey shipped from New Zealand. I also have problems too with the difference between our food prices I keep hearing about the prices in the states for food and being shocked at how low they are. Maybe I'm just shopping in the wrong place. :D

I usually get a one pound bottle of local honey for 6 dollars or so, but the same ammount "commercial" honey can go for around half that at wal-mart, but it's not as good.

(local honey is really good for you and prevents allergies, not to mention that it's money NOT spent at a grocery store. I consider the price differnce worth it)

unless it's on sale it's $11 to $12 for a pound where I shop we are looking for cheaper alternatives but refuse to shop walmart any more.

Well is honey commonly produced in Canada? If not, that would explain the price difference. Honey is a pretty common product, here in the south you can get locally made honey at most places like small independent grocery stores, feed stores, etc. Oh, and our currency is different too.

Not to mention just walking into the place that makes the honey.

That too, but some makers I guess prefer to go through a store to sell it rather than open up thier home as a place of business. You do find plenty of "HONEY FOR SALE" signs in front yards around here though.

Not many people are opting for brains... I guess by that time, you're on the zombie side of the fence right? In their case, what they should be doing to get prepped is:
- MICH helmet
- Elbow/knee pads
- Embalming fluid, for that refreshed feeling of "Wow! I reanimated!"
- Brass knuckles... or something to help break glass and door locks better
- I'm guessing that sashimi alla primate would be high on their list.

I keep my bag stocked with Chocolate Covered Pretzels (Pretzel Flipz).

130 calories per ounce and tasty. I guess they make you a bit thirsty, but nothing excessive. Smear some peanut butter on and that's a super BOB food!

You just barely saw ZLand? C'mon Y.T. Twinkies were significant as only Snowballs and Twinkies were consumed in the making of that movie. I loved the HumV loaded up with weapons and loaded mags... but no food, water, fuel... and no bloodstains. We should all be so lucky to find such a well-powered and well-stocked PAW.

well you didn't ask about vehicles, weapons or ammo here. just food. specifically Twinkies. this is a food-only thread polling our portable food choices, including the snack food called Twinkies, and our views on said snack food. as such I figured I'd share the scientific proof that Twinkies do indeed have inherent value in PAW context.

in other words: "I told you so"

;)

also: your humor meter appears to be broken. might want to check that out. ;)

Your Burning Man story was enough for me; I'm convinced of their barter value. My fun meter was off yesterday. Should be working again today...

Or maybe it's like a car and my fun meter is redlining...

But back to the thread in progress... I read a book last month that had some references to Washington and the Revolutionary War. Soldiers got so hungry they were eating their boot leather. Now, call me crazy but I think you'd have to be pretty freaking hungry to eat the only thing protecting your feet from the freezing cold. Which made me think... you don't hear about people doing this anymore. Sure we get the occassional cannibalism story about airplane survivors, but I guess Nikes are not as nutritious as other food alternatives.

So, what about things we could eat in our BOBs? Hawktex buckles anyone? Leather padding? Wool socks? Sleeping bag fill? There are hidden calories all around us as shown in this satirically-funny Onion video clip.... Pencil shavings anyone?

FTR, I took a protein supplement drink with me on my last BOB hike... it was completely disgusting and made me feel sick and thirsty. Wife and kids shared a Snickers Marathon bar and loved it.

I picked up some of 3,600 calorie Mainstay ration bars... they taste awful. Like dry lemon crackers. True they didn't trigger a massive thirst response, but I was reminded me of Sam from Lord of the Rings where he hands lembas to Frodo... "Lets see we have lembas and, oh look, more lembas." But still they'll work in a pinch and appear indestructible to keep in a car, attic, buried storage, basement shelf. Because they're vaccuum sealed, they make a nice blunt object sort of like a huge frisbee weapon with sharp corners.

however, I will put in some votes for the value of Twinkies.

my first year at Burning Man I brought Twinkies.
those things were like fucking gold.
I could've bartered for a frickin car with Twinkies.
I figure one wasteland is pretty much like the next.
so in the PAW I think Twinkies will have carry some serious weight.

that's right, stock up on the Twinkies.
you heard it here first.

add some bacon and you could barter for a whole town.

Maybe Bacon flavored Twinkies with Cream Cheese filling?

Local fairs and carnivals have brought us deep-fried oreos... coming soon - bacon-fried Twinkies.

Which makes me wonder, traveling carnivals/circuses are basically a surivalists' wet dream right? Has ZS debunked this alla Walmart style? I'm going to start a thread about this.

I'm pleased that Fanatical Moderate has seen a use for EZ Cheese!

I'm not sure what quihona is... more info? And, for the lazy, EZ Cheese now comes in a bacon/cheese flavor. The real issue here is the size of the can and the space it takes up versus how many calories it has. Peanut Butter is more dense, but for some reason, in my mind (I blame my parents) PB is survival food. There's something about cheese that says, "it's not the end of the world yet..."

So, at long last, I got out somewhere I could play with EZ Cheese and guns. Stabbing it with a bayonet type poker... definitley it exploded, by which I mean that cheese sprayed out of the first opening and propelled the can like a balloon for about 2 seconds. Shooting it in the air was even more fun. As a final test, a can that was half full (half empty for all you naysayers) does not have enough pressure to explode or spray cheese. A shot will knock it over and when you check it out, there's cheese slowly leaking from the can. So, the person who said, "Don't pack EZ Cheese, it'll explode..." - you are technically correct, except that if it's going to explode I'm probably also getting shot and/or stabbed; EZ Cheese leaking all over my stuff will be the least of my concerns, and at that level of damage, any type of BOB ration also fails. Though, the thought just occured to me that Datrex and Mainstay ration bars might make good bullet proof plates... I only wish a pic of the can exploding in the air had worked out, stupid camera.

No last cigarette? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!! I agree. Gotta say that peanut butter, maybe even the one with the jelly mixed in, will deffinitely be my food of choice. Remeber when the cop in Die Hard bit into that stale twinkie? Twikies have no substance! I'll need to eat those by the box to keep my PAW empty stomach from rumblin'.
