Ultimate Portable Food for BOB/BOV is Easy Cheese?

Postby EricinVirginia » Wed Sep 30, 2009 4:12 pm

As a poll... if you put OTHER, please post and elaborate.
- Twinkies can survive anything and will last longer than most isotopes.
- Daytrex and MH have those high calorie food bars.
- Civilian and military MREs.

But I was thinking... what would the ultimate BOB, keep you alive to survive, get out of dodge food be? It'd have to be light, portable, crush/water proof, keep its integrity after multiple uses, survive long term storage in car (very hot and very cold), and survive what might happen to it in a BOB when SHTF.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Easy Cheese. It's all of these things and it can be put on or into most anything as a flavor enhancer. A single can will pack about 630 calories. Agree or disagree? You guys all really packing 3,600 calorie food bars? I'm grabbing 1 of those and 2 of these for my 3 day BOB.

Taken from the Walmart website:

Caution: Contents Under Pressure. Do Not Puncture Or Expose to Excessive Heat.

While I am not completely against this idea, I think you could do better.

I don't see any extra TP listed with your Easy Cheese.

There is a reason MRE's have TP and also do a great job of keeping you...well, if not plugged up at least regular.

Peanut butter FTW.

Zatarains Red Beans and Rice is possibly the best bugout food in the world. But the extra weight of the crackers and Tabasco sauce is an annoyance.

the thought of Easy Cheese, particularly straight from the can, makes me throw up a little in my mouth.

however, I will put in some votes for the value of Twinkies.

my first year at Burning Man I brought Twinkies.
those things were like fucking gold.
I could've bartered for a frickin car with Twinkies.
I figure one wasteland is pretty much like the next.
so in the PAW I think Twinkies will have carry some serious weight.

that's right, stock up on the Twinkies.
you heard it here first.

add some bacon and you could barter for a whole town.

Are you recommending that you eat TP...? 8)

Bring it on peanut butter!

In Nov, a bunch of friends and I are doing some shooting... I'm going to shoot a can of ez cheeze just to see what deliciousness results when hit by 12 gauge slug, x39 AK, and 9mm. I think a friend will have a .223 and the local gun shop has offered to bring out some full auto submachineguns. We'll line up the ez cheese and do a Box of Truth style study of the effects of guns on ez cheese

Peanut Butter is a distinguished, upstanding, well balanced food who deserves our love and respect.

Cheese Whiz on the other hand, deserves to be put down. That's a dirty, trailer trash staple food.
I wouldn't even give it a blindfold or a last cigarette.

You got it. Can't take the heat of your car. I did some research and what I came up with was mainstay bars. I personally carry two packs, why?

Primary Reason:
Withstands Temperatures of -40 deg F to 300 deg F

Secondary Reasons:
These bars taste like a lemon butter cookie and provide calories for one person for up to 3 days.
Easily broken into 400 calorie segments and forified with vitamins A, B1, B2, B7, B12, D, E and other nutrients.
5 year shelf life.
Non-Thirst Provoking.
Ready to Eat.

you know what the weirdest thing is? sometimes when I'm sick or nauseous the only thing I can tolerate eat is that terrible Cup Noodle stuff, or the Maruchan equivalent. I will never understand this. I'll have no appetite, or the thought of food makes me gag, but something like terrible-for-you ramen or worse-for-you Cheetos are the only thing I can eat.

I voted Power Bars and Other. I carry Clif Bars and the kind of instant soup that comes packaged in a cardboard cup. To save room, I take the soup out of the cup and re-pack it in a zip-lock bag. On the bag are written the cooking directions and the amount of water to use. My favorite soups are Dr. McDougall and Health Valley.

For other I'd have to say vegemite stuff great for you and can be used in a lot of ways. But the new one they've brought out with cream cheese in it fails.

While I don't beleive in just one ultimate food, peanut butter gets my respect as a survival food. The jar I have with me at the moment (peanut butter+brown sugar cinnimon flavored ritz crackers = epic win) says it's 180 calories a tablespoon! The downside to peanut butter is that makes you really have to drink a lot of water, but that could be said for a lot of "survival" foods like jerky, powerbars, mainstay, etc.

Other honorable mentions: Honey, pepperoni, Planters nut bars (totally underrated), spam/chicken/fish/whatever in a pouch, raisins or other dried fruits and berries.

Easy cheese, on the other hand, smells like vomit and does cruel and unusal things to my digestive system.

In terms of durability, portability, and nutrition ...peanut butter is immensely better than Easy Cheese for a human's BOB.

Easy Cheese is better than peanut butter for feeding pills to dogs. I NEVER would have thought FanaticalModerate would say "I have several cans of Easy Cheese in my preps..." But the critters need their pills sometimes, and that's just the way it is.

MREs=yay! Some of them even have peanut butter (yeah, it's cheating I know).
I agree with Lord Bane and Some Guy as far as Other is concerned.

I think Quinoa, Peanut Butter, and Mashed Potato flakes are 3 of the easiest to fix sources of energy for a BOB/BOV. Of those 3 Quinoa is probably the most stable.
