Wash day: Making my own laundry soap. *Picture Heavy*

Postby Gunny » Sun Jul 19, 2009 2:19 pm

Followed the recipe from here:

http://www.duggarfamily.com/recipes.html

TIPS FOR LAUNDRY SOAP: We use Fels-Naptha bar soap in the homemade soap recipes, but you can use Ivory, Sunlight, Kirk's Hardwater Castile or Zote bars. Don't use heavily perfumed soaps. We buy Fels-Naptha by the case from our local grocer or online. Washing Soda and Borax can normally be found on the laundry or cleaning aisle. Recipe cost approx. $2.

Homemade Liquid Laundry Soap- Front or top load machine- best value

4 Cups hot tap water
1 Fels-Naptha soap bar
1 Cup Washing Soda
½ Cup Borax

- Grate bar of soap and add to saucepan with water. Stir continually over medium-low heat until soap dissolves and is melted.

-Fill a 5 gallon bucket half full of hot tap water. Add melted soap, washing soda and Borax. Stir well until all powder is dissolved. Fill bucket to top with more hot water. Stir, cover and let sit overnight to thicken.

-Stir and fill a used, clean, laundry soap dispenser half full with soap and then fill rest of way with water. Shake before each use. (will gel)

-Optional: You can add 10-15 drops of essential oil per 2 gallons. Add once soap has cooled. Ideas: lavender, rosemary, tea tree oil.

-Yield: Liquid soap recipe makes 10 gallons.

-Top Load Machine- 5/8 Cup per load (Approx. 180 loads)

-Front Load Machines- ¼ Cup per load (Approx. 640 loads)

Powdered Laundry Detergent- Top load machine

1 Fels-Naptha soap bar
1 Cup Washing Soda
½ Cup Borax

-Grate soap or break into pieces and process in a food processor until powdered. Mix all ingredients. For light load, use 1 Tablespoon. For heavy or heavily soiled load, use 2 Tablespoons. Yields: 3 Cups detergent. (Approx. 40 loads)

While this is going on, heat 4 cups of water in a large pot over medium/low heat. We're getting it hot, not boiling

^Once your soap is grated, add soap to your hot water. Just toss it all in there,

Image

^ While that's heating fill a 5 gallon bucket half way (no need to be precise) with hot water from the tap.

Image

^ Keep stirring

Image

^ Once the soap is melted...

Image
Image

^ Tump the soap into your bucket of hot water.

Image
Image
Image

^ Measure out one cup of Arm and Hammer Washing Soda and add it to your bucket

Image
Image

^ Measure out a half cup of Borax and add it to your bucket.

Image

^ Stir till everything's dissolved

Image

^ Once everything's dissolved, fill your bucket with hot water.

Image
Image

^ Once filled, add your lid and let it sit overnight. I'm using a pickle bucket and lid here that I got for free from a local restaurant. Ask around, you can find these everywhere for free.

Image

^ Jugs ready for filling

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Let sit overnight, then fill your jugs half way with soap mixture, then dilute with equal parts of water and shake.
Shake detergent before each use.
Recipe makes 10 gallons (anyone in STL need some soap? Image

Total cost of this project? $2.25-$2.75 for 10 gallons which will be 180 loads of detergent. Once you've used half a large jug, it's paid for itself.

Hope you readers who stuck to the end enjoyed :)

Wow. I think I'm going to have to try that.

How does it smell? My wife is kind of particular about the scents of various detergents, and I'm kind of particular if the detergent makes my clothes smell funny.

And, yes, just go buy a box grater  You should have been able to process the soap in a food processor, too. If all you want to do is dissolve/melt it, the soap can be in pretty much any form, as long as it's small and has lots of surface area.

So if the Liquid and Dry versions start out with the same amount of ingredients. Why does the dry version do 1/4 the loads, really adding water increases the cleaning potential by 4 times?

I would want to make the dry version for storing and make the liquid as needed, 1/2 gallon at a time.

I went to a dozen stores looking for washing soda. 12 stores asking people for something they've never heard of. Explaining to their forced smile that I'm going to make my own laundry soap and that I'm not crazy. Where did I hear about it?...internet.

My hopes are also really high now that I can get free buckets. I'm afraid that will also be a crazy pointless adventure.

Same problem, where do you guys find washing soda, nobody's heard of it. I've seen it, I'm not crazy! People use this stuff, just not around here aparently.

Arm and Hammer makes it.
Target, Kmart, Fred Meyer(Kroger), Walmart all carry it in different areas.

I guess I will have to try Walmart then... I just really hate that place, but none of the smaller stores carry it.

Our Walmarts don't carry it. Only place here that carries it is Albertson's. I've only seen it in grocery stores, not in department stores.

Thanks a ton for the recipe, will be moving out soon and soap is a pain to find for cheap in a college town.

Just found washing soda. I'm trying a few different powdered variations (people are suggesting ivory soap instead of fels naptha, thinking about doing a 50/50 mix too), then I'm going to make the liquid version based off of what works best.

Thanks for posting this.

Our local "super" walmart has the 20 Mule Team borax like Gunny used. It's what I use in the laundry from time to time (and to mix up my home-made ant killing formula, too).

Thanks, Gunny. Any thoughts/critiques on how it performs?

So how did the pots/grater clean up after using them for this procedure??

I'll be making up a batch of this soon..just saving up some detergent containers.

I'm not the OP but I've never had trouble cleaning the stuff up ... its just soap and kind of a mild soap at that. Sometimes I do have to soak the grater but I use a larger grater rather than the fine one. It takes a little longer to get the soap to melt but I used what I had on hand and that's what I've stuck with.

If you are going to put these items in your dishwasher to clean them between uses I'd only use about half or less of the normal soap ... bubbles, lots and lots of bubble. My girls had a mess to clean up because they put the soaped up stuff in there without knocking any of the extra off and then adding the normal amount of soap for a load in the dishwasher. They haven't made that mistake twice however.

So you guys dilute it to make ten gallons...

My question is, if I only have the "2x Concentrated" detergents, can I leave it at the five gallon concentration and just use the smaller cup to measure it?

Actually, do you even use the laundry detergent caps to measure it in the first place?

I have a high-efficiency front loader. So, do I use the ¼ Cup per load measurement?

Im thinking yes, but it doesn't say anything about high-efficiency appliances. :)

Oh, and nice work. :D

It works fine in the front loaders and I just use the small measurement ... a quarter cup sounds about right, if that.

This stuff is good because it is liquid and low sudsing which is the big deal with the low water, high efficiency front loaders. I do tend to pre-treat my stained items or put the heavily soiled stuff (like my son's football jersey and pants) in the "soak" mode for a bit before running it like a regular load.

And just to give y'all a little hint, you can add a bit of Cascade dishwasher detergent for the whites and I've found it brightens them up quite a bit. Sounds bizarre but it works. A soak in the Cascade, really hot water, and your soap solution and you rarely need bleach ... which is great if you have a septic system.
