Improvised light and heating sources

Postby rsnurkle » Sat Mar 03, 2012 1:41 pm

Just saw this tuna can oil lamp linked over on bushcraftusa--a supply of clean nails is now on my prep list, and a larger stock of tuna (or maybe I will try one of my canned chicked cans...).

Anyone else have any fun urban-material improvisations for light/heat?

Also, in case you're reading this and haven't looked at the Winter Mock Bug Out contest entry thread ( but...why would you do that? ), Scurvy's entry had some nice improvised candles out of recycling/trash and olive oil: viewtopic.php?p=2004311#p2004311

I'm not sure I would want to eat the tuna after it was a candle.
I prefer just pouring leftover animal fat into an old cat food can and letting it solidify, with a cotton ball or piece of yarn for a wick.
Or one could just make an oil candle with oil leftover from deep frying -

This type works well too, with the platform cut from old plastic lids -

In my day, we didn't have virtual reality.
If a one-eyed razorback barbarian warrior was chasing you with an ax, you just had to hope you could outrun him.
