Colorado hiking and fishing trip

Postby ILswatcop » Sat Apr 21, 2012 7:51 pm

After searching through the forum topics, I couldn't really find one that I thought was applicable to my topic, so please move this if needed.

I am wanting to take my 17 yo son on a hike in fishing trip somewhere in Colorado. We will be going later this summer. I would like to see if anyone out there had suggestions on a trail/lake/stream to use. We would like it to be away from the crowds, a strenuous hike is ok, but we don't want to spend more than 1 day hiking in/out. We are also looking at maybe 3 days at the site, wherever that may be.

Thank you in advance!

Lost creek canyon, Box Canyon is awesome in the summer. There is a large boulder field that you have to rock hop to get to the campgrounds. The river is always running with trout and salmon and there is always beautiful hiking along the river adn to the east of the canyon.
Whatever doesn't kill me... Better start running at least past 800 Meters!

PM Septimus from the CO forum and ask him to let you in there to post this question. I live in CO but unfortunately don't have the info you need, but I bet some of the others will.

I know the Box Canyon area because I lived there. Don't let my Florida location fool you. We have held a camp and shoot in Lost Creek Wilderness area and I have camped many of times in the Box Canyon area myself. You can go to Estes park but I ma not familiar with that area. I just know of this area and it has accessible water sources.

Hey SwatCop, just for a Marine and a soon to be Marine. Sangre De Cristo Mtn range southern Colorado west of Pueblo and South of Canon City. So many choices, so little time, multiple species of trout and I saw 3 cutthroat trout in a lake I will not name over the net that were over 2 ft long. You're looking at 4-5 miles of hiking to get in and elevations that start at about 10,000 on up to 12,000. PM me and we can talk more in detail if you are interested.

I used to visit this area all of the time when I was a kid with my family and father. It is where I was taught how to fish and I think it would be perfect for you and your son. If you take the music pass trail head it is less than a days hike in but I hope you have a 4wd vehicle. If you don't have the appropriate vehicle then there are other trail heads that you can climb into the mountain rainge with.

Hi,
I just got back from a week in Buena Vista. Although it wasn't a "hike in, hike out" camping trip there was a lot to do in the area. We fished the AR river. Drove to Cannon City area and did white water rafting in the Royal Gorge. And went horse back riding in Salida area. We weren't there for bushcraft so we just "kicked it" most of the time. I've also camped in the Texas Creek area which is also very beautiful.
have fun and good luck,
chris
