the best way to fire harden a stick is to place it an inch or two beneath the embers of your campfire. Scorching or burning the is the wrong way to do it. Putting wood beneath the embers is like using a primitive form of a kiln. They wont splinter when you hammer down on them and make it easier to drive into hard ground.
