What Knife / Knives are in your Kit for working with Wood?

Smallest to Largest, what do you have packed away?

I'm still sorting mine out. I'm weighing my pack down with too many knives.

For my pack, I have 2 small multitools and one small folder for fine details, the Cold Steel GI Tanto for medium size blade tasks and the Ontario kukri for battoning and larger tasks. I also have 4 other knives for more self defense/ hunting purposes.

For what I have in mind I am looking to buy one of these...fell in love at first sight with them years ago but never got around to buying one....nor that Cold Steel Voyager...erguhum I present the "Rasel"(+/- s/z wtever)
Image

It gets bonus points for...

1)Chisel tip
2)A hammerable tang. Mall ninja scorpion tail skull breakers belong in that other category of cutting tools.
3)A little hole for putting shlong through in order to measure for size gain/lose while using a Swedish Power Pump Max 4000 (purchased separately)

I've always wanted a chisel tipped knife. There is something about them that screams AWESOME, and they could be very useful for prying, atleast more so than a pointy tip.

mk_ultra, many cool points for the Bark River knife.

I also have one (see my avatar), but mine is not a full tang model, not a commonly available model, and it was a 20th anniversary gift from my wife.....

.....so, I haven't beaten it with sticks yet.

I'd pair it up with either a hatchet or saw, for the above reasons.

I mostly just use whatever Mora I've got on hand. I made a tripod style wooden stool up at the camp a couple of weeks ago, which involved hammering the thing through a 3 inch thick slice of log three times to make holes for the legs. After doing that, carving out the holes, and then fitting the legs to the holes, the thing was still like a razor.

Other than that, I mostly use a saw. Sometimes I'll bust out the SAK if I need to do small carving (since the one I use has a small blade, which is awesome for fine work).

Since this is a thread about wood working, it's worth noting that I found both the ESEE 3 and 4 to be less than wonderful for working wood. They don't bite into the wood terribly well, and the big bellies get in the way of a lot of carving. You also have to choke way up and use that little finger groove to get the best leverage, which is awkward, and the thumb grip on the back of the blade starts to get uncomfortable well before an in-depth project is done.

Honestly, I'd stick with the Clipper for working wood. A Clipper is what I was using on the stool I mentioned earlier this thread. It really bites right into wood. And despite what people on the intertubes want to say about them, I hammered mine through a log several times to make holes for chair legs, and it's fine after. I really beat the shit out of it to see what would happen.

This is my Blind Horse Knives Canteen Shop edition. It feels like the knife was made for my hand, just a kind of magic that I can't describe. It has a Scandi grind and with a few strokes of the stone gets razor sharp for such a stout little blade.

I also carry a leatherman crunch, gerber dime, Laplander saw and am considering a hoof knife (like a spoon knife) and an axe. Just don't know if I feel like carrying all of that.

I expect any knife I carry to be capable of processing wood in some form, from my small neck knife for precision tasks to my belt knife for medium-duty tasks, to my machete and axe for heavier processing. All my knives are fixed blade and durable.

I typically carry either a mora or a Bird and Trout style knife for finer work, a heavier blade for tougher camp chores, and some kind of tool for firewood prep (either a svensaw or a hatchet)

The SAK in the middle is for most work, but the Enzo does a great job, too.

I also can't say enough good things about Hultafors knives, especially the HVK.

Benchmade Barrage 581 is my pocket EDC so that will always be there. Always have a Mora, most recently a Robust model, in the pack as a security blanket.
Winter: Gransfors Scandinavian Forest Axe, Fiskars 21" Bow saw, Becker BK2.
Summer: Estwing leather hatchet (meh), Corona 10" folding saw (this is an awesome saw and even better value at $20), Schrade Extreme SCHF9 (this is also an incredible value at $30).
Ripped through a boat load of other gear that broke at the worst times in moderate to heavy extended use. Most recent was a Gerber folding saw that broke last spring on the third stroke of a hundred mile hike.... These combos above work well for me with much redundancy designed-in.
You do not need to spend a ton of money for good sound gear in this arena.

I may be tool heavy but I'm not a tool.

Red Panda, that 3 piece setup pictured at the top of your post looks nice. A man could do a lot with that setup, some cordage, a tarp, and a firekit.
