Hunting in GA

Postby MFCory » Sat May 05, 2012 7:37 pm

So currently as most of you may know I'm still currently in Hawai'i but will be coming to GA within the next couple months I hope. Im looking to go hunting when I get back for pretty much anything that is allowed in GA but not sure what season or animals are allowed. Also I have never hunted before due to never having the opportunity so if anyone look like to hunt together and show me the ropes I would greatly appreciate it. Also being in Hawaii I cant find deer meat for the life of me so if anyone has some that they aren't using I'd gladly PayPal you if you could ship it. Im also looking to try alligator meat. Let me know.

I would highly suggest looking up information on private hunting clubs (like the East Juliette Hunting Club - if they still exist.)

As for gator meat...there are a few restaurants that serve it. The tail is the best part.

I'd offer to take you out hunting this season but, I've become a vegetarian and no longer eat meat.

Also you can check:

Georgia Department of Natural Resources
www.gadnr.org/

Enjoy your hunt.

Squirrels are plentiful enough all you need is a good pellet gun and a walk in the woods.

I'm not sure on where you're planning on moving to but if you find a good meat market there are some that carry farm raised bambi, thumper, and flower (just kidding I'm not sure even a zombie would eat skunk.) Bison is now readily available in the large chain grocery stores.

If you are really jonesing for exotic meats...both Bass Pro Shops and Cabelas offer farm raised deer, rabbit, duck and, pheasant. I will warn you cost are pretty dang steep (nearly as much as going hunting.) I can't remember the name of that Gator farm outside of Mobile, AL (or was it near Boloxi, MS??) but, if you do an interweb search for Gator Farms, I'm fairly certain you can find one that ships.

I'm not sure on "fuzzy tail tree rat" season, check the GA DNR web site I gave you. I think Summer time is a down time but that may not be true.

My best friend is currently stationed in HI with the USCG and from his horror stories. I feel your pain.

I would also recommend the wild hog hunting in S. GA whenever you get back

So i have looked at all kinds of websites to order exotic meats and they are pretty pricy and I never knew u could order lion. But yeah so if anyone is possibly willing to mail me some I would pay for it and shipping and handling just been a long time since I've had squirrel and venison. Oh and one more question anyone on here ever been alligator hunting? Ive always wanted to try that out.

Alright so I currently do not own any guns at all and I am wanting to start buying now. What I want them for is hunting. So anyone have suggestions on make and model of a gun for each species of animal that is aloud to be hunted in GA?

In my opinion there is no perfect gun as each is "mission "specific. But a good bolt action in .308 is one of my favorites for long range shooting and will take pretty much all game in North America.

The Remington 700 is one such rifle that is very popular due to its connection to the US military. However you can find other similar rifles for much cheaper . I have also heard good things about Savage, and supposedly they have excellent triggers.

If money isn't an issue then I would suggest a. 338lapua as that round is NASTY . Extremely flat firing and hits like a truck.

If money is a major concern then I suggest an old Mosin Nagant. These are Chambered in 7.62×54R which is similar ballisticly to the .308 (7.62×51NATO) These are great rifles for the beginner because they are tough and more accurate than you would expect for the money. You can pick one up for less than $100 almost anywhere and the Russian surplus ammunition is extremely cheap at about. $80 for 440rd.sealed tin...just clean it after using that Russian surplus as it is corrosive.

.308 bolt rifle, 12g shotty, and a .22 will get you everything you need. You have to use .22 rimfire or smaller for rabbits, squirrels, and such.

Savage 11/111 Hunter XP, Remington 870, and a Ruger 10/22TD are my recommendations.

Ok we're moving off topic here with the gun thing but consider this idea:

If what ever is going to happen happens think about your ammo supply, you've got a bunch of boxes of this that and the other for each different gun.

True a .380 or a 9mm hand gun is an excellent choice for daily carry and, yes I do carry a monster framed 357 snubby with me daily (Ruger SP101.)
Now my one single (for now) rifle is a SKS. I have a single shot 20 gauge also. I am planning on getting a second rifle in .357mag because as far as a white tail deer goes a .357 mag is plenty enough for a good kill. Now the 7.62x39 is good for a 400 yard shot if you're going to be shooting that far.

Put things into perspective here, if you match your hunting weapons ammo to you pistol's ammo you won't have so much to carry with you when bugging out.

Harrington and Richardson - http://www.hr1871.com/default.asp Synthetic Handi-Rifle in .357mag
Also though no longer made there are two 9mm rifles out there, a Marlin 9mm Camp Rifle and the wonderful Ruger 9mm Police Carbine which accepts Ruger P series magazines. Both can be found on gunbroker.com

While multi-role ammunition is a great concept, that's all it is to date. Pistol ammo makes horrible rifle ammo, and vice-versa. I'm not saying that one can't be used as the other in some situations, but neither is all around. Powders, bullets, rifle twist, and barrel length are all major factors in every calibre. A .357 carbine is cool, and useful, but it won't perform the same as a rifle cartridge at rifle distances. Is a .357 carbine better than none? Yes. But, I wouldn't trade in a 5.56 or a .308 for one. I also wouldn't trade a .357 pistol fora 5.56 pistol either. They perform their designed tasks with differing effectiveness.

I also wouldn't bet my next meal on a 400m x39 shot either. Can it do it? Yes. Will it do it? If you're lucky. I'm not saying you won't hit a deer sized target, but if I'm hungry, I don't want to track a wounded animal for two days either. *note: not an x39 vs 5.56 argument, as I wouldn't rely on a 400m 5.56 shot either. I'll likely hit where I aim, but accuracy isn't lethality.

Your ideas are sound, but the application needs a little more work.

I'd trust a .357 carbine within 100m for GA animals, but I wouldn't trust it as my hunting rifle. Same as I wouldn't use a .308 within 50m (depending on target of course).

A perfect world will find you outfitted with a hunting rifle, a carbine, a pistol, and a shotgun.

Adjust as needed. Supply as required. Plan for the worst.

Are planning on coming to Stewart or out to benning? I am at Stewart. Here is my advice. .30-06 will take down anything you find here in Georgia and just about anywhere else in the U.S. I also recommend a 12 gauge shotgun. I run only Remington as that's what I was raised on. Mossburgs are great too. Then for small a game a cheap little guy like a marlin model 60 .22 is a great gun. My boy has them and it's great. I also take my .40 with me when I hunt just as a backup. Also look into archery as well. It's fun. I own a PSE Baby g-Force.

On a side note I really don't like 7.62x54 like the mosin Nagant. Only due the nature of that round. They like to start tumbling at longer ranges.

You can hunt wild board year around in GA. They are considered pests.

And He said to them, “When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?”
So they said, “Nothing.”
Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one.
