OCCUPATION:
Working in a really cool (IMO) hands-on science discovey place, helping people to have fun and learn a little more at the same time (if they wish.)

For many years I was in computing (before it became ITC.) In the early days, the 'mini' computers I worked with were only 4 feet tall. Some had 128K of memory, and others a massive 256K. A couple of them were booted by paper tape, which sometomes broke. Fun days - no menus or GUIs in sight - much easier to persuade TOM to do just what you wamted! Much later on, I was one of five automatimg a factory using Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs); then I came across X.25 and similar.

SKILLS:
Probably more than I think I have.

I am a first aider at work (necessary requiirement.)
Computing (including modern day stuff!)
Helping people.
Cooking.
Listening.

WHAT DO I WANT TO GET OUT OF THE UK CHAPTER?
Sharing information and ideas, possibly leading to becoming a bit more organized against our local zombies and a bit more self-sufficient in our local climates and conditions; friendship.

RANDOM STUFF
Have 2 teenagers, and we are just coming to the first 'important' exams very soon. We all hate coursework....

Also have 2 dogs - labradors. One is 13 and now almost blind and deaf, but she's the first to know there's food being prepared in the kitchen! The other is 8 years old but is still mistaken for a puppy  We lost our first lab almost a year ago; she was 16.

Have played Advanced Dungeons and Dragons (AD&D) for almost 30 years; our youngsters are now playing it - I am in the middle of running a version 4 dungeon for two adults and 4 teenagers (a bought in one this time - cheating a bit, but makes it much easier to get used to the new rules.)

Used to do police and practical pistol when the requisite weapons were legal in UK. I wasn't very good at either, but my gun handling skills improved a lot! I did win a club competition - I shot no better than usual; everyone else had a bad day... I occasionally shoot underlever carbine and black powder revolvers now, and even more occasionally shotgun.

I read a lot, mostly murder mysteries and similar.
I love zombies - if I'm a decent level AD&D cleric!

WHAT DO I WANT TO GET OUT OF THE UK CHAPTER?
A warm feeling that, compared to some of you lot, I'm quite normal!
RANDOM STUFF
My family's first home computer was a TRS-80 Model 1, and it was brand new.
I'm a trained Swagelok tube fitter, a lapsed First Aider and an ex-pat Cornishman.
Unlike (it seems) 90%+ of ZS:X'ers, I've never served in the military, although I do know a few who have!
Once upon a time my job involved filtering raw sewage ...

Postby smiffy » Tue Mar 17, 2009 10:32 pm

NAME:
You guys can call me Smiffy.
OCCUPATION:
Freelance non-specific scientist (don't have a day-job this financial quarter)
SKILLS:
Two years of synthetic and analytical Chemistry at Imperial College (Britain's M.I.T, if it's not quite on your RADAR otherwise).
A degree in Biochemistry from A.N.Other Russell-group uni, that included copious amounts of cell-culture and pharmacology.
An abortive PhD in Diagnostic Bio-Physics
(Jack-of-all-trade, master of none, sadly)

Archer, not quite living-and-breathing it as much as Ad'lan does.

SCUBA Diver - incl. basic decompression techniques via. BSAC (Started in PADI though)
Not mixed gas-trained.... Yet!
I do have the tables for In-water recompression *somewhere*. This is a dangerous technique I'd only apply if no other help was available (it's v.v. dangerous if the patient loses consiousness or vomits, unless you have "whole-head" dive-masks, which are rare amongst sportsmen.)

My first aid training for diving is now out of date, but did discuss both automatic defibrillators (before they became more common) and positive-pressure ventilators.

I've dabbled in Mediaeval living-history. The people on this thread who specificaly do "ECW" or "WotR" may claim the group I was with are a bunch of non-specific dilletants, but if you can't do a Tudor water-flask in the PAW, why not do a Byzantine one?

I can do rough carpentry, brew some fair-to-middling beer, cook, clean game, navigate on sea or land, shoot and sew. I've also tried horse-riding, driving a 4x4 off-road driving, some v.basic metalwork and fly-fishing enough to say I understand the underlying concepts.

WHAT DO I WANT TO GET OUT OF THE UK CHAPTER?

To share, improve & expand my skills, that might be necessary to endure crises, catastrophes and disorder, and to ensure the best chance of survival in the aftermath of such an event.

RANDOM STUFF
I hope to learn some pre-industrial smithy-work soon.

Eight years on I still miss my ferret, even though he was a total softie who'd nest with the two siamese cats.

My sleep-schedule's fairly SNAFU, too.
