UK gear sources

Postby sheddi » Thu Dec 04, 2008 5:27 pm

We've had a brief discussion amongst the UK ZSers and felt it would be helpful if there was a thread specifically for UK suppliers of ZS-related kit. This serves two purposes: it lets UK members know where to look for suppliers of kit, and saves us from taunting the US members with our kewl British toys

Mods, feel free to move the thread if you think it belongs somewhere else.

Here's a few of my favourites to get things rolling.

The cheapest supplier of UK rat packs I know of. Their other surplus is usually reasonably-priced too.
http://www.genuinearmysurplus.co.uk/

Three surplus sites run by the same company, the first dealing in wholesale sales (minimum order £250+VAT), the second being their Grade 1 (or better) retail, the third Grade 2.
http://www.fieldtextiles.co.uk/
http://www.the-outdoor.co.uk/
http://www.britishmilitarysurplus.co.uk/

A general-purpose outdoor store I've had good service from:
http://www.foxsoutdoor.co.uk/

Here's a German surplus store I've used successfully, although paying them is slightly complicated:
http://www.army-world.de/shop/index.php

And here's the amazon.co.uk listing for a hazmat book I was recommended by Chef:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Emergency-Respo ... 159804415X

I'm sure there's more, but it's late and I need to go to bed!

Here's a couple things I spotted while our Christmas shopping today:

B&Q have knocked £10 off their little 2-stroke generators. They're now £59.98.
Image

They've also got Energizer LED headlamps for £7.98. (For comparison, the same thing is £12 in Homebase.) OK, they're not going to win any gear ninja competitions but they're plenty good enough for near-field work.
Image

B&Q also have Fiskars ("Wilkinson Sword") composite-handled hatchets for about £14.

Tesco have some decent-sounding flashlights. Two models in particular stood out, both with aluminium bodies and 3-watt LED lamps. There was a 2AA model (sorry no link) for £8, and a 2C model (the link claims D cells but it's wrong) for £12. The 2C model claimed to have a Cree LED, the 2AA one was less forthcoming. Their website also mentions a 4 watt 2D version for £18 but there was no sign of that in-store today.

Me again.

Blacks and Millets are both having their pre-Christmas sale with 50% off some of their stock. Also, there's a buy-2-get-1-free deal going on with a lot of their "gift" items - things like flashlights, compasses, waterbottles etc.

Odd thing is, despite Millets and Blacks both being part of the same chain (Blacks being the more upmarket stores) - they're not discounting the same items by the same amount  so you might need to do a bit of comparison shopping.

Local Millets has a range of "eco energy" in at the moment in their christmas sale including hand powered LED flashlights, wind up radios etc. Worth a look.

<smacks self in head>
OK, having been back to the shops today it seems that the items included in the Millets/Blacks sale vary between stores in the same chain as well as between the two brands. It seems as though I'm going to have to brave the 90% Chav population of Basingstoke once more if I'm to find any of the stuff I want included in the sale.

I have bought from these guys and they are very prompt. I get surplus ammo tins from them, cheapest I have found. I found that surplus .50cal ammo tins hold almost exactly 250 12g shells each :D

If anybody from UK is ever down into Wales - Snowdonia way ,the GELERT shop at Porthmadoc is well worth a look.

The factory where they make the lines for there catalogue is very close nearby and have seconds on stuff like cooking kit , rucksacs , sleeping bags , clothing etc that just need a buckle here or a zip there and the prices are crazy

The unfortunate thing is you cant get any of the seconds online.....

Last time we were there we bought 3 season bags for a fiver each (Zips u/s) and fitted new velcro strips! Sleeping bags for the whole family for £30 .....

I use a fair bit of Gelert stuff. Good to know mate, thanks. Oh, but don't mention the word gelert to Midgetyaz. She saw the statue of Gelert once and now she thinks it's some wierd batdog demon thing.

Oh, as for the 24 hour British ration packs I found them here,

http://www.genuinearmysurplus.co.uk/pag ... /rowid=419

For £4.50 each with £5.95 postage for the first ten. So if you're buying a box full you might be able to get them cheaper here.

Also I'd like to add,

http://www.ee33.co.uk/ - For your inner mall ninja. They have a huge range of gear. Everything from tomahawks, to glowsticks, to nightvision gear, to hard carry cases, to just about anything you can think of. Go check them out. I guarantee you get shiny kit syndrome.

At this point I would like to say without going left of centre we hould have a subcategory and name it "GyverTHREAD"....... :)

Without sounding like a closet socialist  , theres probably a lotta people (me inc.) that cant entertain having designer gear....and a thread of "how - to`s" may get them more involved into the mainstrem stuff easier.

Dunno ,just a thought.....

Thomas - Mcgyvered to the Max 2009

Nice links though all told

Brash, I have been looking through*edit* the Brit gear sites looking for a winter/artic top and bottom. I know your Military has them but I can't find any. Any advice?

Lenny can I ask which arctic / winter kit you’re after, is it the over whites or the base layers ? I have a few contacts that might be able to point me in the right direction.

Tesco has the click to activate gel hand warmer two pack for £2 in the sports section. Millets sells a similar product for £8. I had 5 sets on the basis they can be prepared and left with the blankets.

Yes I'm cheap

He's got some pretty bloody good deals on body armour too which I was just looking over. :D

I won't be at the meeting at the end of this month. Falls on my birthday unfortunately. First meeting I've missed and I'm gutted. If you do make it though have a pint for me. They're a good bunch.

Where abouts in the south are you from?
