Brrr! Cold snap from 14th Jan 2012

Post by sheddi » Wed Jan 16, 2013 6:47 pm

In case you've missed it, it's finally decided to get cold in the UK.

Forecasts for Friday show freezing temperatures and a risk of significant snowfall pretty much everywhere:

Time to top off your preps, check your travel plans, and see if you can find your sledge in the back of your shed!

It's not cold here :P

They can't make up their mind whether or not the snow will reach us. I hope it does but know I'll be disappointed :|

Stay safe everyone :)

I know it's cold when the horse troughs freeze over.

I know it's really cold when the taps freeze over night.

Today, I thawed them out, and then they froze again over the day.

It is Cold!

Soft Southerners. Its so cold up here that last Saturday night the kids going into Newcastle Night clubs had T shirts on

We have about 4" of snow and averaging -9 at night up here in the Borders, its the wind and potential for drifting that I think will cause the problems.

It must be :oh:

Edit: the latest Met Office forecast give a RED Warning for snow in South Wales. http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-21063003" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

It may snow here but I'll believe it when I see it.

Looking at that linked article, I see:

Maybe they're making Disaster Welsh Rarebit? :D

In my end of Norfolk, lowest temperature I've recorded in the garden is -6.6c, with a high of 3.8c this week. My place of work is shutting down for some of the public tomorrow, but I'm still required in. Just been making sure to eat well, dress for the weather and keep the place warm (and the drives and paths clear and gritted.)

So this morning I cleared my car of snow, gently eased up the drive onto the road around my estate, set off towards the main road and then failed to make it around the first bend.

I hit the kerb at ~15mph and killed a rim. I've got my doubts about the (new last month) tyre, too :(

Photo to follow ...

That aside, I'm off work (we got sent home at lunchtime) and I'm about to take the children sledging :D

It's just started to snow here, but as yet it's not settling. It's really breezy here too.
My poor sheep, if its bad we might have to bring the remaining 40 from the fields into the lambing shed.
Anyways stay safe :)

Poor scrappy is missing out on the fun, due to being part way through a partial restore. :(

Every single morning. Back pack on gas canister and blowtorch in, end of the garden defrost hose pipes. Up to the field and axe up the troughs. Cut wood for the day, butcher any game, in by 9am. Work DONE.

But I did pay for the work so not all bad... and all that for a low speed turn into a side road covered in about 3 inches of bloody snow 2 years ago... Sheddi mate, I feel your pain !

I had a little sideways driving moment too, certainly focuses your mind. Thankfully I managed to keep my car on the hard black bit and avoided the green bits at the side. A few heartbeats were wasted though :awesome:

There has been little or no snow here. It's just going to be a typically boring mild winter.
I feel awful for the family's of the not one but two avalanche victims. One of the people that died in the first one was from the town I went to school in :(

Another 'Snow causes Chaos' lunchtime bulletin, are any of you affected?
No real snow here, just snow showers and biting cold winds.

We've had the odd flake, no accumulations.

OTOH a colleague from 50 miles east of me arrived at work this morning reporting 12" of snowfall, with 3ft drifts

I'm friendly with a sheep farmer in North Yorkshire, between the snows and Schmallenberg he's having a hell of a winter.

As a motorcyclist I can honestly say..
I've had enough of this shit.

I can't even get to work without freezing my cock off and crapping my pants from hitting multiple pieces of ice. Seriously Bedfordshire where are the gritters? I live on a main road (somewhat rural but main none the less) why the hell isn't it being gritted when its hitting -5 out here. Seriously, like what the balls.

Sounds like your local roads service has either run out, or decided they have to conserve it for next winter. Which is no help to you now when you need it :(
We have had remarkably little snow this year compared to the mainland. It's just not making its way across.
