Is the primary comm source echolink only?
Echolink is great because it allows techs to talk. Is there an HF net?

Noam, here are some thoughts for you to consider...
I was a part of a nationwide emergency net. We developed a comradery amongst our group. We layered our comms this way....
1) We held a net every saturday morning and did a basic checkin
2) we were broken down regionally. There were 5 regions if I remember correctly. The only problem with that is I could not necessarily contact most of those in my region. I am in Illinois but I get into Tx, AZ, East coast GA, Carolina and the NE states easily. We began the net and did a quick checkin in the event there was critical information that needed to be passed. Once checked in, we passed information. Our worst info while the net was operational was the continued threat of bad guys and meth heads in our immediate area but nothing nationally. But our net expanded to prepping and security talk.
....
Here were our layers. First was email. We had a yahoo group started. Then when you sent an email to the yahoo group, it would be disseminated to all members. If there was an emergency one email could alert the whole group. There were no emergencies so it was more passing of announcements and such. Since many had smart phones, info was received in an instant. I remember getting them while in church. LOL
If that failed, we went to HF. We had protocols set up. Primary frequencies, secondary frequencies and tertiary frequencies primarily set up on 40 and 80 meter.
In the event of a national crisis, we knew the protocol and where to head to on the HF frequencies.
We were always mindful of this one thing, One swipe of the pen, the POTUS can shut down all comms..... phones and internet. The only thing that cannot be stopped is ham radio. This was also an incentive for our tech people to move up to general.
Where is the net now? It was super organized by one person. Certain things happened such as opsec concerns..etc......ultimately it just ended. But when it happened, I had printouts of maps of peoples locations, excel sheet of members, and a list of protocols.
Maybe this is more than you really wanted to hear. But it was great while it lasted.
FYI, none of us were Rambos....I'm not. We were however preppers. Our group consisted of teachers, college professors, VP of a large company, preacher, business owners ....etc.... We weren't like a bunch of wanna be lunatics or Rambos waiting for the world to cave in. We were just normal people. You have my email info, feel free to contact me and I can share more or answer questions. Regardless, thanks for allowing me in. While I do not have too many posts, I frequented this place many times but just recently decided to register.

Incorrect. That same pen swipe can (and has) shut down every amateur station just as easily under the War Powers Act.southernguy wrote:

That is certainly true. But the executive order I am
referring to is in the event of riots locally and regionally. We are not talking about war but about shutting down comms to prevent rioting.

War Powers Act still applies. Just because the name says "War Powers" does not limit it to only times of war. POTUS can, and has shut down amateur radio in times of civil unrest.southernguy wrote:referring to is in the event of riots locally and regionally. I doubt that will shut many down....
That same act allows the government to come in and seize your property. Which again, will not be popular.

The pen may swipe, but unless the military jams the frequencies it does not mean your radio will not work. If things were that bad, my radio would be broadcasting because I never received communications that I shouldn't be on the air.

One thing we do not do here on the ZS Forums is discuss illegal activities. You are right. I wasn't trying to suggest something illegal. Just hard to get the info if SHTF.
