AAR: Tactical Shooting on Long Island

I suppose this info should be in the Firearms section, but since this is a rarity for Long Island I thought the ZS 7 members, particularly those in southern NY would be interested. There is a 2 day Tactical Carbine course being giving at the Brookhaven Town Shooting Range in Ridge - Suffolk County. Classes are scheduled for April and Aug. Details can be found at RedBackone.com I have no affiliation with the company or with BT range. I just know that for years I have looked at taking a Tactical Carbine course and it seems like you have to travel to AZ, NM, VA, FL or NC for the more serious courses. I was very surprised to find this course by perusing the M4carbine forum. The company is from VA and its relatively new, which may explain why they would venture to Long Island which is hardly gun friendly. Anyway, just figured I'd get the info out for those Long Islanders who are starving for tactical training in the metro area. I hope to take the August course when the weather is nicer.

I would be interested. There is another company from Utica that comes to LI for Tactical Carbine, Tactical Pistol, and some edged weapon classes.

One of my buddies is former PMC and current VTNG CWO who is planning a few courses like this in the near future. Probably in upstate NY.

I just registered for the Tactical Carbine course in August. Doesnt look like RedBack will be back til sometime in 2013, so Im glad to get this opportunity for some Long Island based training. Maybe I will see some fellow ZS members on the line.

Course is this Mon-Tues. I will post an After Action Review when all is said and done. Spent a few hours at Calverton zeroing the AR and adjusting the magazine carrier, holster etc. Looking forward to this.

AAR. This was a good course and at times physically demanding. It not only covered shooting, but combatives, first aid for GSWs. Instructors are Combat vets with plenty of real world experience to back up their lessons. Course started with speed shooting on the clock. Then on to FTF FTE drills. The bolt carrier over ride drill was a very frustrating and difficult drill to work on. But crucial to winning the battle. Hands on combatives was an unexpected portion of training. Various drills kept the course interesting and challenging. The final exercise was making an improvised tourniquet and applying it to another student, then dragging the student 100 ft to cover. That drill was extremely physically exhausting to all the students. The class was mostly LE and some Mil and then some civvies. The lessons learned are well worth the cost of training and ammo. About 20 % of the students had attended prior training with these instructors. A challenging training event that will truly have you running and gunning.

Looks like MDTS fron upstate NY, will be doing a Cabine course out at Calverton in Nov. More affordable than RB1, as you can take either the first day, Carbine 1&2 module, or the second day, Carbine 3&4 module. I may try to swing this, if I can convince myself the weather won't be that cold.

Looks like the MDTS Carbine Course scheduled for April out in Calverton has become a casualty of the NYSAFE ACT and ammo shortage. Many tactical courses are cutting back on round count to keep the course affordable- as far as ammunition costs are concerned. PA may now be the closest state for carbine training.
