WCT Potluck Dinner Discussion/signup

Postby Jamie » Wed Jan 05, 2011 4:40 pm

It's been kicked around a bit that we could have a potluck dinner during this year's Winter Camping Trip, and I think that it's a great idea!

I think that it would be best to have it on Friday night, while all of our stuff is not yet fully frozen.

I think that it would be good to talk about who wants to bring what (with the understanding that people are free to not participate if they don't want to).

Stuff to Bring
Beverage
Appetizer
Salad
Side
Entree
Dessert

If people could respond in this thread with a post mentioning what they plan to bring, it would be great!

I'll provide a couple of hot cocktails (available with and without booze).

I will make a 15 alarm chili and maybe 15 bean soup, I have no problem feeding everyone as I do it here. I have a vegetarian (no beef or pork) hence the 15 bean soup & no food probs on my end.

I really want to try to do a chicken or smallish turkey in a hommade oven as I have in the past. It's a helluva lot of fun. Well...at least it is in non-WCT temps, anyway.

I'll be cooking some formerly living thing and veggies. I'll also try to get the wife to bake up a car load of high calorie goodies.

Folks don't like mah cooking nun... so I'll bring some booze.
I might help Melis with the desserts, though.
Actually, I may try to make some camp bread. On the coals. In a dutch oven...

I ate only about 1/3 of what I brought last trip,.....so what I can do instead of being more efficient is just bring the same amount of a variety of stuff. I just have not yet decided what that will be yet.

I am bringin' the portable propane Weber this time though, so maybe I can pull of some burgers, hotdogs, steaks, kabobs, or sumthin.

Optionally, we could do a breakfast/brunch kinda deal too,.....bacon, omelettes, pork roll, sausages, bacon, pancakes, home fries, and some bacon.

I should be doing so. As long as I find a cardboard box big enough.

While I probably can't get there early enough on Friday night to participate in the dinner potluck, I've been thinking about doing a bigass breakfast thing. I've got a dutch oven that needs some use, so maybe a mountain man breakfast over/inside the campfire on Saturday morning?

I had my physical recently and mentioned to my family doctor I'd be going on this trip. Long story short, he challenged me to make sticky buns in that kind of weather. I may bring my own dutch oven for this purpose, just because I like to rise to challenges. Other than that, the best way I know how to feed an army (especially in that weather) is to throw a bunch of shit into a cast iron skillet or dutch oven and fry it up and then add eggs and scramble it all together. Onions, peppers, bacon, cheeses...whatever. Dare I say treet?

I know Melissa called desserts but I'd like to bring a few dozen cookies...

I'm still planning on a hot and alcoholic beverage...probably milk with gin and midori melon and bacon...

(or maybe hot cider with cinnamon and lemon and brandy and such)

I'm pissed and disappointed to report that I can't do my chicken idea. My life's been so crazy lately I haven't had time to get any materials together. At this point, I'll be going crazy packing my regular stuff as it is.

ETA: Investigating other options.

Going to to some shopping tonight/tomorrow before I leave. Any requests? I'm afraid the chicken oven is out at this point.

Nothing needed here. Too bad about the chicken, I was interested in seeing that for sure. Made some homemade truffles for the weekend that I don't want coming home with me, so I hope people are in the mood for sweets.
