I was up there May 26th (last Saturday) .... didn't go all the way to the top (to the pit) on account of my sorry ass 2wd car. Passed by a few patches of snow, drove over a few more in other people's tire tracks, but had to stop before the top (hey that rhymes) 'cause I happened upon a patch of snow there was no fuckin' way I was gonna try and drove over or around. So I just went to one of those trail heads further down the mountain where it was obvious other people had been shooting at, and shot there.

I need to get back up there soon to sight my rifle in (it's behaving itself far better these days, no malfs since I doctored it up). Maybe I'll go again near the end o' July, when I know all the snow will be long gone.

No word on the status of the planned shooting pit closure. Anyone heard anything??

Because he knows a frightful fiend doth close behind him tread.

I haven't had a chance to go up here yet. Been shooting at range near me, but would like to go to this place. Anyone have any news about this place?

So, last week marktaff and I were able to drive up to check out the pit location, and see what's what. The good news is that there wasn't any snow. The bad news is what we already knew, but visually confirmed..

On the way up, passed this sign:

Got there to find this sign:

And noticed the obvious lack of 'use' in such an area proclaimed as 'HIGH USE' in the previous sign. As you can see it was a beautiful summer day, about 10am on a Friday. The only one of *12* parking spaces was being used, by a fire-pit.

The elevation at this point is 3400 ft. The ridge line is at about 3850 ft. Ooh, I can drive up miles of logging road, and park near the top, and hike up that last 450 ft of elevation gain (on Weyerhaeuser land). Sounds great!! I can see why this is such a prime spot for outdoor recreation!

Not only was nobody up there, but we didn't pass anyone on the way in or out of the former shooting range. driley and I encountered lots of people in the Alpine Lakes 'Wilderness', but nobody in this 'high-use recreation area'.

Thanks for checking that out guys.
That's a bunch of BS though, I don't know of any places left anymore other than the ranges. This is BS.

For the folks in Washington state: http://www.waguns.org/rangemap.html

If you join WAGuns, you may meet a few people willing to share the places they go that aren't on the map.
