I like the part where the main selling point is how *green* it is to cook with alcohol, and how burning alcohol doesn't 'doesn't harm the environment like petroleum based fuels'. **Riiiiiiiiiiiiiight**We can discuss this over the weekend if anyone really cares to know the differences. So, then he goes on to explain that you typically cook with HEET or denatured alcohol, which both contain Methanol (which is toxic and can kill you) and maybe worse (acetone, methyl ethyl ketone,
methyl isobutyl ketone, and denatonium...).
Normally I would recommend using common rubbing alcohol (isopropanol), which indeed does work, but it is typically diluted with 30% water which does you no good, especially if you are trying to cut weight for a backpack. It also probably puts out about 30% less heat anyway. So what to use? Look for Iso-Heet which is made by the same company, but comes in the red bottle instead of the yellow bottle. It is 99% isopropanol. The other 1% is 'Proprietary Additive' which I would guess is again Methanol..![]()
Anyhow, my point is, the guy on ebay has something to sell, but be careful what fumes you inhaleespecially inside a tent.

d.riley wrote:Thanks for that. It is more obvious now that I was speaking from textbook knowledge, not experience. I can see why someone would prefer the regular heet over iso-heet.
Denatured alcohol though, just doesn't make sense to me because it is usually 90% ethanol and 10% methanol. Why add the 10% methanol and make it toxic? 100% ethanol on its own is plenty useful for lots of things
In any case, I will stick with my propane and propane accessories..
So, back on topic. What NON-bug out gear are you bringing to make the trip more bearable? Here are a few items I'm bringing that I don't normally have in the BOB or even in the trunk:
Beer
Tent
Lawn chair
Dog and dog accessories
cheap entertainment..
cheers

Great food - worth the trip.
I have class Friday night, so won't arrive until Saturday AM (11PM Friday would just suck).
