Depends on where you live. Sounds like your skill base is a little slim in this department though. I would consider consulting a contractor. If you live in the deep south then your water table is so high it is nearly impossible, or exorbitantly expensive to build one. If you live in a rocky region then you may need specialized equipment to drill and split boulders. Do you want it deep to protect from Nuclear Fallout? If so then you will also need very specialized and expensive ventilation, among other things.

Consider building an above ground bunker. Small concrete building with a good coat of water sealer on the out side and then cover it over with dirt and sod. Then have a good reinforced steel door. This is a much cheaper and easier option.

EDIT> also, it's much easier to wrap your bunker in blue wire if you build it above ground...
Upon reading one of my posts you should assume that before I post I reread my posts twice and then often again after I post to check and recheck for spelling and grammatical errors. And I still miss most of them because, as it turns out, when you are home-schooled, you are only as smart as your mom.

In all seriousness, consult an engineer. It would be the best course of action.

Remember how I rescued that thread "So, you're bugging in" with a long response laying out a multi-layered, reasonable, and stepwise approach to home security?

A shovel, and some elbow grease. And an onion on your belt, as was the style back in my day.

This is a serious question. I don't see everyone needs to get the turtle shit going on every new guy that shows up.
Don't confuse a belligerent and aggressive attitude with the strength, training, and conditioning needed to prevail in a fight. How do you know you have the Will To Win, if you don't even have the will to train?

Yep. Only you couldn't get yellow onions on account of the war.

I'd recommend a backhoe or something I guess. Need to make it deep for all the throwing stars and ninja gear.

ETA: In all seriousness, you need to hire someone who knows how to do it. An undertaking like this could end in everything from hilarious failure to horrible death. If it is worth doing it is worth doing right.

What will you need? Let's see, off the top of my head:

1) A building permit.
2) A qualified engineer to design the thing.
3) Heavy digging equipment.
4) Concrete
5) Rebar
6) Lumber
7) Currugated steel.
8) Plumbing/drainage gear/hardware
9) Air circulation/purification hardware
10) Electrical hardware.
11) Generator or solar/wind setup with plenty of deep cycle batteries.

I'm sure that there are probably about a thousand other things that you'd need in addition to that list.

Here's plans for building a underground Fallout Shelter from a very early FEMA. There's also plans for an above ground fallout shelter and improvising one in a existing basement from the same time period floating around on the internets somewhere.

I heard you can use a Septic Tank.
