Dumbest advice you have ever heard for preparedness and surv

Post by bigmattdaddywack » Sun Feb 21, 2010 4:33 am

What is the dumbest\worst advice you were ever told or read concerning preparedness and survivalism. Could be over any topic. I am asking this so we can all know what bs to look out for.
Also it should be a little entertaining.

Yes. I had a cousin who did that in WWII supposedly, he was on the eastern front, until he was sent to Britain in the Polish force.
That is what I was told by family, i dont know if he really did it, but it would not surprise me too much.
Drinking pee is not a good idea.
Eastern Front stories are great :P

He fought at, and was wounded at Monte Cassino.

I should trade my AK for an SKS if I wanted to hit anything past 20 yards.

It's kind of hard to decide what was the dumbest....but I can think of a few that would be up there-
1- When TSHTF go to Walmart, you'll find everything you need there free for the taking.
2- A .22 rifle and peanut butter will be all you need to outlive the others, then you can scavenge their stuff after they've died.
3- If you have enough guns and ammo you will be the ruler of your area.
4- Pick a firearm based on what LE and the military use....if you run out of ammo you can get more from them.
5- 3 days of food and water is "enough".
6- You can bug out with a pack and live indefinitely off the land, like an indian or mountain man.
7- You will be able to get enough food by hunting in an emergency.
8- That simply by being better prepared than anyone else near you, you will be recognized as a leader after TSHTF...even if they've never heard of you before.
9- Stocking things is enough, you can learn the skills as you go once the emergency happens.
10- The only food you need to stock is wheat, salt, and sugar.

Personally? Not on the internets?

Buy gold. Me and a guy I know went around and around on this one night. His argument was that gold was universally accepted and would continue to be so as long as people liked shiny things.

I tried explaining that carrying something heavy, inedible, and with no innate value might not be such a hot idea in a place where people who liked shiny things were no longer kept in check by law, or were replaced by zombies, or were more interested in stuff they might actually use...at which point he told me that was okay. He'd be safe.

Because he'd be borrowing one of my guns.

....I'm going to miss him when the zombies come.

I assume you informed him that he would be on his own? Because, more seriously, the guy might actually be dumb enough to go to your place if he feels he needs a firearm. (Even in a non-contingency scenario) Might be nice to let him know you won't allow that.
Slow zombies, evidently...

Sad thing is...he owns a few.

But mine are cooler. Ergo, in the event of emergency he's going to borrow one. Very convenient really - it saves him the trouble of getting his own, and as long as he's borrowing a gun it's not too terribly unreasonable that I should cough up a few extra magazines to go along.

I shit you not. Dude had a straaaaaaaaaaaaaange way of looking at things.

Happily, he doesn't know where I live now.

1) Anything in the "Zombie Survival Guide" - especially barricading yourself ont he second floor of your house and tearing out the stairs!
2) Moss only grows on the south side of trees.
3) That bugging out to Wal-Mart as a secondary plan is a good idea.
4) Birdshot is an acceptable defensive round.

My favorite - Nothing is ever going to happen.

A side not about gold. While I think its not the only type of investment you should make it does have some bright spots (pun intended) if you have a BIL and don't have to carry it all over.
1) I can help hedge inflation while everything is fine (your money losses value when inflation happens while gold rises in price with inflation).
2) Gold will always be worth something (it always has), were as money can become worth nothing if the government acts stupidly.
3) You can pretty much trade gold for money anywhere in the world.

You beat me to it. A buddy of mine is convinced that holding up in a Wal-Mart would be perfect. This is what told him: During the chaos of Hurricane Katrina there was a Wal-Mart that had been completely stripped within a days and even though it was void of all goods people still went there and were even ripping up floor tile and stealing it too. During disaster scenarios people are most likely your worst enemy.

Bolt action rifles are slow especially when something better exists. Don't get me wrong I own one and they're fun cheap rifles with plenty of cheap ammo available. I think most people put down the rifle because it is one of the reasons Germany lost WWII. What worked during WWI did not work for WWII.

that, right there, is the way to do it, only if it doesn't get in the way of your other preps. The thought that AeroRat's friend had, where he would buy gold instead of prepping is wrong.

as far as Mosins go... not that they're bad but I wouldn't get one, It's not that I don't like them but I have better stuff stored so eh
