Projection of extended blackouts for CA this summer

Post by MPMalloy » Sun May 12, 2019 7:40 pm

From Bloomberg: California May Go Dark This Summer, and Most Aren't Ready

I don't know what to think. I only posted it on account of the outlet. YMMV, as a general rule.

Interesting. The guy mentioned in article lost power for a week. So his solution was to install a solar battery system that will power 3 to 4 rooms for 8 to 12 hours at a minimal install cost of $16,000. Hmmm

Guaranteed that power cuts will never be made in areas prone to rioting. Anyone want to bet against that prediction?

I think they will cut power wherever the risk of them getting sued out of business is too high.

The power shut downs will be to wild fire prone areas during times with high winds. This after the Camp Fire last year was caused by wind taking down a transmission line, causing sparks in a dry area.

Urban areas aren't generally wild fire prone. Now, if transmission lines from power plants TO urban areas go through wild fire prone areas, well, that might be an issue. But I think this will mainly bear on rural areas, especially those with lots of brush and/or trees.

Power lines leading to Los Angeles through the Angeles forest. Now did someone mention riot?

Won't the resulting fires light things up? :)

Well, how neat. Just another reason to move to the Golden State.

Given how much power comes into CA from out of State (so they can pollute someone else's backyard) mean long, high power lines running across vast areas of dry bush....

This summer will be interesting for SoCal. Good luck to them

It's been pretty wet in Cali so far this year. Maybe they get lucky.

More likely it will spur growth that will then dry out over the summer and become fuel.

YEA pretty much. The wetter the winter and spring. The bigger and hotter the fires

If you do not have a generator already and you want one, you may want to buy one now. The demand for portable generators is likely to be intense if and when CA starts getting blackouts.

In most of CA the cost of electrical power like gasoline is very high. Not on the level of HI but still silly high in cost. The return on this $16,000 if he uses it to reduce to offset regular power usage may actually repay his capital investment over the useful life of this equipment...maybe...possibly. :D
