Lunch at Seven Hills - MARCH 20

Postby magdelaina » Tue Mar 09, 2010 2:16 pm

After the last meeting, I contacted Seven Hills homeless center to see if they needed any hands. They mentioned a Lunch Angel program but said there weren't any slots open, but that they would keep us in mind.

I just got word that the group scheduled in their Lunch Angel program will be unable to provide services on March 12 and 20, and the center has offered us a chance to fill in on one or both dates. We'd be providing a hot lunch for 75 - 100 people on site. Before the 20th, I can get a ton of tomato sauce and bread dough from where I work, add noodles and we have a spaghetti dinner! So, we can definitely pull something together for next week. I can't do much before Friday though, any ideas for then?

We still have the food drive going on this weekend, but the more the better! Who's in?

I will be in Topeka for a Rugby game, however if there is anything that you need that I can donate I would be happy to gather things up.

Status Update!

I'll be checking out the layout of the area we'll be in tomorrow.
So far we've got a donation of 16L of tomato sauce, and a two-burner electric stove and two stock pots to borrow.

Guesstimate for the rest of the supplies needed for approx. 100 people to have spaghetti and garlic bread for lunch Saturday is sitting at about $75.00, minus any donations collected until then. If anyone knows where we can get pasta, breads, veggies, meat, or utensils and plates, look into it and report back! More stoves and cooking vessels would be good. There are no kitchen facilities on site, so we'll be cooking with what we can bring. As far as drinks go, bottled water is looking the cheapest route and requires no added equipment. Tastier alternatives welcome!

Go to Jimmy John's and buy all of their day old loaves, make garlic bread. ... That may or may not be enough bread... but it's like $.50 per loaf, which is cheaper than wal-mart.
"People tend to not prepare until it is too late.. We live in a society that believes it is beneath them to do for themselves. Self-sufficiency was the dream of people escaping tyranny and poverty... The American dream is now luxury and convenience. Anything else is squalor, antisocial-insanity or amusing and pitiable eccentricity at best."

UPDATE!

Recently found out that Saturday lunches are held in the fellowship hall of a local church, because the center is closed on weekends. I kinda cringed at that at first, but there will be no services that day though, so I think it's neutral enough. There will just be church workers present to open the doors and lock up behind us. The name of the place is Wiggins Memorial United Methodist Church, at 205 MLK Blvd in Fayetteville.

Donations have been going great so far. Again, I'm kind of shocked by everyone's generosity.

We have:
Lots Sauce and Meat from Pizza Hut
25lbs Pasta from Noodles
29 Loaves Bread from Jimmy Johns (Thanks for the lead, Heckedy Peg!)
Lots of Additional Bread and Meat from Private Donations
Drinks, Plates, and Utensils from the Center
Cooking Equipment from Pizza Hut and Eureka Pizza

We Still Need:
Italian Seasoning
Garlic Powder/Cloves/Salt
Butter/Spread
Onions and/or other Veggies
Foil
Roasting Pans, or other Large Dishes for Transport
Heavy-Duty Potholders
Giant Spatula or Wooden Spoon

If anyone has access to the things we still need, or has anything else they can bring, let me know soon! If we can't find it for free, Marvin's IGA Superstore has promised us at-cost pricing, which is generally 20%, but varies by department.

GAME PLAN:
Cooking will commence at my place early tomorrow morning. How early? We'll try for 7, but I'm a heavy sleeper. PM or Call/Text me for the address. We'll brown meat and veggies with a little sauce and some seasoning in one pot, make the base sauce in another, and the pasta in another. The bread can be prepped and rotated through the oven.
Lunch needs to be served by 11:30, but it's recommended that we arrive to set up by 11:00. It will be cafeteria style, with plates at the front end, then pasta, then sauce, then meaty stuffs, then bread. We're expecting 75-100 people, maybe more if the weather is nasty. This is a regular event though, and I've been told that things usually go very smoothly and quickly. We can expect to be out of there by 1:00. We've got four or five planning to attend already, but more is always needed!

Event Complete!
In Attendance: aheadofthedead (pending online arrival), Colt45, Cronyx, Dresden, magdelaina, TheAntiAnti.

After giving my kitchen a thourough beating, we arrived a few minutes late, and served everyone firsts and seconds with about half leftover for donation. Turns out they did have a resturant worthy kitchen of their own, but cooking 25 lbs of spaghetti on one burner was half the fun. The other half was had after the event, with pool cues and plentiful free drinks from a very generous barkeep at Brewski's. As the icy doom encroached upon the city, ZS was sleeping it off.

Pics and donation totals forthcoming.
