Best Brands and Ideas for Long Term Storage

Post by ednemo » Tue Mar 01, 2005 7:48 pm

I am interested in what has the best shelf life for an extended wait. I need some items to stock up in my pantry that look somewhat normal. I have had MREs but am looking for something more normal that I can get at the grocery store. Any ideas? I know Spam and other potted meats are generally good. Is there something out there that will last 10 years in the can? And what is the longest I can expect to keep something stocked?

If you only want items that you can get from regular grocery stores and don't want to bother with vendors like http://beprepared.com then buy regular can foods and dried foods. They won't last over 10 years but if you purchase foods you like and rotate them out by using them periodically and restocking you shouldn't have to worry.

I could live of off MREs if I had to. Give me fresh game anyday, though.

Now, don't get me wrong. I would much prefer wild game as well. But due to family concerns the place I would outlast any minor problem, (a week or 2), is at my house in the city. There isn't a lot of wild game around my house. Squirrels and birds would be it...

You're forgetting all the used to be pets :)
CANNIBALS. Ever see a slime drive a car? These vermin fit the bill.
Poorly armed and led, they are easily dispatched.

You may have to search, but this site has tons of great info on dehydrated food and long term food stores.
