The supersized U-Haul straight truck is right up against the limit for non-CDL operation in the lower 48, and it's GVWR is 18,000#. If that vehicle is rated over 9 tons GVWR then I'd go for the CDL just to be on the safe side, but remember the rules of the road are more strict for a CDL holder (no drinking within X hours of driving, no exceptions, lowered BAC for OUI, DOT Physical, etc.)

Ummm... just the front power unit alone is 32,000 lbs. The GVWR of the complete unit (with trailer) is 58,000

So I was a light infantry guy, have only ever seen these driving by, and only with the trailer. I see some of the tractor units have sold for 5k.

What is the space behind the cab?
Is it a flat deck you could build on?
Extend the cab for more seating?
Would it be possible to tow a fifth wheel with one of these?

The space behind the cab is where the engine, fuel tanks, etc. are. Not really usable space.

There is a 5th wheel "adapter" rear body unit, the Mk 16.
