My newest project: The Bug Out Trailer (Pic's)

Postby Badlands » Thu Jun 21, 2012 12:15 am

Started the next in a series of builds, Here is the bug out trailer, it's a utility service bed made into a trailer, I cut out the rounded fenders and squared them off to give it more tire clearance and make it more off road, all the doors lock and the top tray is long enough for fishing poles or firearms, the frame is from a 1 ton truck, it has heavy leaf packs and coil over shocks, I just sanded the whole thing inside and out and primed then painted it, I installed my own spare tire mount on front along with a gas can and a high lift jack, I then installed a 40 channel CB radio in the COMMS compartment along with a deep cycle battery, then I mounted a 102" stainless whip antenna out back. You could load all your camping gear, food, clothes, weapons, ammunition and fuel into it then when the time comes to bug out just attach it to you vehicle and go... I had plans to put a water tank and tool box in the bed, add a Canoe rack and solar battery charger. Also though about putting a shell on it and building a bed inside or looking for a duel sport motorcycle to put in the back, there are so many possibilities. I want to add a shovel and axe mount somewhere too.

It's looking awesome so far. Can't wait for more updates of the build or pics of it all loaded up.

You do nice work dude. 8-)

I really like that. It is exactly what I want and have been looking for as a camping/Bo/hunting trailer...with the exception that I'd add a propane tank up front and a slide out grill. 8-)

What would you say the weight on that sucker is? I've been looking at the 416's but that turned out real nice!

Not sure on weight, my guess would be 1000 to 1200 lbs empty, I'm working on a tailgate today.
It has mounting plates for a propane tank in one of the forward compartments. I will be looking for a water tank that will fit across the inside of the bed. Another nice thing is it has a fuel fill inside one of the compartments so I might go to a junk yard and pull a gas tank to mount underneath, stealth gas storage with a hidden fuel fill pipe

I have a utility bed on a 3/4 ton frame sitting at the house that I have been considering setting up like this. I wasn't sure how it would work but I may have to pull it out of storage and get to work on it.

I just can seem to find one. Since I don't weld I can't make my own. I guess I'll just keep scouring CL.

Hey caenus, to bad you don't live closer, (I'm in Idaho) or I would sell you this one. I'm thinking of listing it on ebay. I'm off work so this is what I'm doing to make $$$ until I get back to work. So far i have done a 1976 Jeep, 1971 Bronco, 2 Vintage Cafe Racer Motorcycle's ,94 Corvette, 66 and 65 F100 Hot Rod trucks, a trick motorcycle trailer, an M715 military truck and now this BOV trailer. Heres some pictures.

It'd be kinda cool to add some sort of tonneau cover for the bed. Maybe a retractable metal one like the RollBak

Very nice! I don't know about keeping a rifle in the trailer but certainly shows lots of space and handy compartments. I really like the 715 too. To bad you are not way closer.

I really like how you've keep it very "unassuming" when everything is closed up. To the layperson, at first glance, it's going to look like a very clean work trailer.

I would have loved to play out the following scenario:

"Hey Clout, wanna come check out my new rig?"
"Sure, be right over. I'll grab beer on the way."
"Here she is!"
"You brought me over here to show me a very clean, green trailer."
"Go ahead, start opening the doors."
"Ermagerd, you have a communications hatch! F me, look at this reference library. Cahmahn, are you kidding me with this food pantry?"

Well done.

My neighbor just had one just like this show up in his driveway yesterday. I'm seriously considering asking where he got it and if he (or whoever owns it) is willing to part with it. His is still painted yellow with some stucco companies logo washing out and fading off the side. I wants it..

Very nice... I would think it's more in the 1500Lbs. range empty, considering it's a 1 ton frame and axle. Did you pull the guts out of the pumpkin?

Do like!

Looks even better when full of supplies and gear.

Yeah... the guts and gears are pulled out of the pumkin, no need for them and it greatly reduces weight. How to make a heavy trailer as light as possible!
Oh and I just picked up a ham radio and an 11 meter radio for the comms compartment! My sister called me from a yard sale and said "You gotta get over here" so I went and bought the two radios! plus I just came into possesion of a nice 2 meter radio as well
I am going to have to add another shelf to the comms compartment and enclose and vent the battery.
