So anyways... Sold the M715 and got a new BOV

Postby Badlands » Fri Jun 08, 2012 12:40 am

I sold the M715, my wife wasn't in love with it like I was so I went out and bought this 4X4 truck and camper from a 75 year old man that stored it in his shop, it's in really super nice condition with only 80,000 orig miles, it has brand new tires and a brand new $2800.00 heavy duty transmission. I pulled the rear driveline and replaced all the U-Joints and the carrier bearing then pulled the pumpkin cover as it was leaking and checked the gears, all was good so I buttoned her up with a new gasket and filled it with new gear oil, I also pulled the wheels and checked the brakes, all 4 still had 70% of there lining, I found out the drivers side rear leaf spring pack was weak as the camper had a lean to it, so... I bought some $250.00 overloads which didn't fix the problem so then today I went to a Pick a Part wrecking yard and got a set of heavy duty rear leafs from a diesel truck, they also had some heavier duty commercial overload springs already mounted on them, they were a biatch to pull laying on the wet cold northwest ground but I did bring a tarp to lay on, it was worth it as the whole set up only cost me $42.00, New springs would have cost me $600.00 and HD overloads another $300.00 so $42.00 didn't seem to bad, now all I have to do is install them! :?

"my wife wasn't in love with it "
******

If Momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy. Look at this way, you get to hang onto your kidneys for a few more years.

FWIW, a military unit I work at purchased a 'training system" that required off-road mobility and had to carry a S-250 shelter stuffed with hi-tech commo gear. The truck the Beltway Bandit chose was - (Ta-Da) an F350 4x4 with double overload springs.

With the shelter removed, driving off road felt like it could kill you - the ride was so stiff, so your rig, esp with the spring upgrade should be fine, even if a tad top-heavy.

And now you have a nice, bug-free bed to sleep in, stove to cook on and a heater for those really cold nights....

(Edit, I need to learn to spell more better)

Comfort did have a lot to do with it, when the SHTF at least I will be comfy and warm, plus owning it means no bank can take it back. I feel good about it! It's my mobile retreat and I already have a site or two picked out as a BOL. Now I am looking at solar kit for the roof and I already installed a SSB/CB radio and a Scanner. I ordered a switching splitter that allows you to use your am/fm radio off the CB antenna and a dual coax to hook up the scanner as well, also have a firestik antenna with a ground plane and a spring on it to hook to the roof rack. I will get everything hooked up today.

Ok.. so all the radio equipment is installed and was tuned using a SWR meter, I have good reports on distance and clairity so the cb/stereo system is complete... for now! Also got the overload springs put on and wow what a difference, it really took away the mushyness in the suspension and I swear it makes the truck shift better, it feels a lot firmer on the road and the overload springs tightened up the steering by putting more weight on the front suspension so no more road drift.
