Hovercrafts are great, assuming fuel mileage, noise, reliability, maintenance, payload, and hills, aren't a significant concern of yours.

4X4 is nice, but in my AO, a 2" receiver hitch on the front and back for a portable winch, is worth it's weight in platinum.

That's how it is around here, either white sand or slick-as-owl-shit red clay...... It's all about momentum. :D

unfort i ruined a wedding here. was high tide and the truck was digging so i had to give it a lot of gas. a nice 15ft rooster tail. i kinda felt bad but they set up at the entrance to the beach access and on the side you can drive on, not the restricted side which was 30 feet the other way

I agree that a lot is about the driver and picking lines. I have been all over Baja in a vw squareback and an 85 ranger 2wd with a posi rear end and rarely got stuck. The rule is when in doubt, walk it. Momentum is also key and good throttle/brake control. Heck, I even drove that ranger on Malerimo beach for 50 miles. I was camped out there with a cold beer and a fishing pole and a group of jeepers showed up. "Are you stuck?" No. "How did you get your mini pickup out here?" Helicopter... They all had wide eyes after that. I just took the tire pressure down to 7 pounds... Most people that get stuck in sand don't do that first...

Most people who get stuck anywhere didn't air down first. Some Jeep guys that I was out running trails with in my 4x4 S-10 Blazer kept telling me to take the bypasses because I wasn't running very tricked out at the time. After the third one, I walked the pass and didn't see anything I didn't think I could handle and went ahead and took the S-10 through with little trouble. The same guys telling me I couldn't make it through, got stuck that same pass because they took the wrong line and were still running their tires too high and the side walls couldn't grab as well as they should have. ;)

Buddy of mine had a 1992 four door 4X4 S10 Blazer with nothing more than a 2" lift and some decent AT tires on it. He used to scare the sh*t out of me with that thing, out on the trails and clay pits...... One of the toughest, most capable trucks I've ever seen.

Mine had a 2" lift, Mud-terrain BFGs running 31x10s and a 2" body lift to give the tires a little more room to play. But yeah, bad ass little truck. Rock climbing was it's only real weakness due to the IFS not allowing a whole lot of travel compared to a solid axle Jeep. That was about the only time I would get into trouble with it was climbing and hitting a spot I needed another inch or two of travel to get a grip and just didn't have it. Loved that truck. Traded it in for a Jeep tho.

I would agree that a lot of driving is the driver. The second best vehicle I have ever owned (after my lifted and locked 97 Landcruiser) was a 1985 civic. I only got stuck one time in the snow with that thing and it was my fault (backed into a 3' ditch) and me and a buddy pushed it out no problem. Again it was all about momentum, I would hit a big drift with some speed and simply float over it. I've also had snow coming over the hood of that car and it keep pushing through. Buying the best tires you can afford, airing down, and experience goes along way driving in less then ideal conditions. With all that being said if SHTF I wouldn't trade my 'Cruiser for a civic and truck load of AKs and Virgins.

Civic like the one I had

My 1972 bug has a lot of off road experience, and also has gone farther than some trucks on flooded streets in the summer, so...

When I was a wee lad, my Dad had a '70s-something VW Bug that had a Baja front clip and a full-length fiberglass skid plate.

We used to "skip-like-a-stone" across the muddy spots of our hunting club that the guys in 4X4 trucks would get stuck in...... Good times!!! :D

You want to piss off a Jeep driver? Pass him going uphill on a tricky slope in a VW Bug, going backwards. ;)

Backwards, cause, you know, lower gearing, engine weight and drive wheels in the back... it made sense at the time.

That's a bad-ass Bug (and driver).
Absolutely bad-ass, its just too bad that it can't be a real BOV because it doesnt have 4 wheel drive and all.

Where does it claim that cars are off-road beasts?
Seems to me that all that is being stated is that autos are more capable than some would have us believe,
and that some amount of off-road ability rests with the driver and not necessarily the machine.

After reading this thread and other similar threads in the past, I have come to the conclusion that
some of you guys have a little too much "Mall Ninja" (or in this case the term "Rock Ninja" may be more appropriate)
mentality when it comes to a BOV, and confuse transportation with some fantasy post-apocalyptic battle wagon or some shit like that.
Not saying all of you........just some.

I know it stung,.....that nerve I just hit.
But you needed to hear that.

But hey what the fuck do I know?
Not a damn thing. I'm just an asshole on the internet.

Funny smiles on your post?
Where?
I must have missed them.
Really the majority of the post wasn't directed at you personally. ( Other than that whole "MOM I'm stuck in the woods" part  )
This topic comes up every now and then and was directed at the myopic few who feel that if you have anything other than some bad-ass four wheel drive, then you cant possibly have a BOV. My apologies if you felt I was directing it at you.
Care to join me in another round of Kumbaya?
