Right back at you! Your wood fab skils are amazing. Very nice trailer! Not "redneck" at all.

You mentioned that the base trailer was a one-off. My question is, is anybody out there making these kinds of trailers? Or at the very least a base trailer like you started with leaving it open for the owner to mod it like you have.

Sierra4x4 http://www.sierra4x4trailers.com/ and Adventure Trailers http://store.adventuretrailers.com/

make them but you'll pay quite a bit more than I did :(

But, you will get great quality and well proven designs.

On topic, you talked $ on the trailer and everything . About how much would I want to set aside for just the solar setup?

I'm blind now so I'm typing without any spell check..... LOL

What is your plan for SOLAR? Just charge the main battery once in a while or will you have a load such as a freezer fridge on a second deep cycle battery?

For instance, my fridge pulls 2.5 amps when it cycles on but my 54 watt solar panel can dump almost 3 Amps into the battery for 6 hours out of the day, or 18 Amp hours. So if the fridge ran 15 minutes on and 45 minutes off in each hour of 24 hours that would be roughly 15 amp hours (.25 x 2.5 x 24) so the solar panel can keep the battery topped off with good sunlight without the fridge flattening the battery.

To duplicate my setup: I bought the Optima Blue top at Costco for (I think) $169, the 30A charge controller on EBay for $60-ish and the panel is worth maybe $160

50 watt $170 http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-50-WATT-12-VOLT ... 5444447905

65 watt $210 http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-65-WATT-12-VOLT ... 19c44d0d2b

combo deal

My Bug-Out Trailer and Vehicle

Postby JDeMent » Thu Apr 28, 2011 1:21 am

PS: what sort of trailer did you buy? Start a thread with photos!

I have a thread started on Expedition Portal with pics. I'll post the link. I found a construction compressor trailer on craigslist last week. Perfect size, and tracks about the same as my 4runner. Just about got killed when an F4 tornado hit Lambert Air Base, St Louis Friday night, so haven't been home to work on it too much yet.

Thank you much! I've got some more things to do on it before too long. One of them is to try a leaf spring swap out to lower the overall height and also the center of gravity. I found some great used stock Jeep YJ springs at a salvage yard that will easly bolt up. I just have to figure out how to hold the whole trailer up and also if I need to change out the shocks and add bump stops.

I've been a little slow to update my blog. I really enjoyed looking back through the photos and remembering the great time that I had and thought I would post this report.

I had some amazing fun! I was able to experience first hand how nimble and capable a modified VW Synchro can be.

The terrain was awesome and the history of mining once again drew me out into the canyons.

Come ride with me as I explore along the Bradshaw trail with my BOV and trailer. 8)

Where did you get these? I used to use these in the Air Force, years ago, and have always wondered where I could find some.

What he said! I think that I've also seen them in one of the local hardware stores (Ace/Lowes/Home Depot)

Couple of questions. #1 any clue what weight axle that is? #2 any clue where to get those shocks? #3 what type of steel is used for the sides?

i have an axle sitting in my garage and i plan on doing something similar to this! thanks in advance!

The axle is a Dexter 3500# with electric brakes. I don't know who makes the shocks but I suspect it is an aftermarket type such as Rancho that would match the Jeep YJ-style springs.

I do not know exactly what the steel is. If I can find a spot to use a micrometer I'll measure the thickness for you. Almost all of the edges are bent and or welded so it may be hard to measure. The trailer was built by someone as a first article for eventual production. They were going out of business and I bought the trailer "as is".
