Here is that rim, cleaner than what's on it. It gets a sandblast, degrease and paint job this weekend and a fresh tire. Took me 6 months to find one under $100...

New seats from the Boneyard today. $60.00 including the belts. The Captains Chairs will come off the pedestals and go up front, and the Bench is a "Rock and Roll" and folds flat and slides forward on a track. I'm going to make a platform behind it for a full bed.

Also got a horn from a Mercedes wagon. Loud ist zher gut!

Got a bunch more stuff today. A 6 gallon water tank, a Stainless sink, 3 assorted "Oh Shit" handles, a set of 4 nifty folding table supports plus some assorted brackets. a set of sun visors that match the seats. Also a bunch of electrical parts, relays and switches and buss connectors as well as a whole bunch of 4gauge wire for the battery setup.

I think the plan is to build a small cabinet with some quick release latches on it to easily remove. Inside a Reliance "Baja" 2,5 gallon jug and the pump, and a Cat Litter jug for the grey water. Make the power cord long so I can use it in or out of the van, but right by the side door so you can wash hands while standing outside.

Nice, that cabinet idea sounds a lot like what i plan for my vanagon sometime in the future. Just need a rock and roll seat first, and on that note: What vehicle did yours come out of, and could you measure the total width and hight from floor to bottom of the seat? Vanagon's rarely came with the R&R seat over here, due to tax laws that was a 15 grand (USD) option

Today's project was to get the '64 vintage rim that will be my spare ready to have a tire put on it. First step was 3 days of Ospho baths I dr the work week, then today a heavy rinse, sanding, degreasing, and then two coats of primer. Let it sit in a nice warm spot and gave it it's first coat of gloss black.

So for the back seat Rock-n-Roll bed, I decided I needed to make it 2 inches higher to get it to clear the driver side rear wheel well. And to do that, I needed to make some steel extensions I can weld to the seat base.

I'm using 1" square tube I liberated from a pile in my dad's shop. Pretty sure this was from the roof rack of his 72 Titan MH, which went as far north as Fairbanks and the arctic circle back in 1980, as well as many trips all over the southwest and Baja.

So I stripped the paint and cut 4, 3" blocks and 2, 20" rails, and welded one together. This will also get welded to the bottom of the seat unit.

Needs a lot of cleanup, more later.

Just going at it, one piece at a time...

So here is my auxiliary power storage in the form of 8, 18 AH SLA batteries. They weigh 103 pounds together. I'm wording them up short term at least, inside behind the drivers seat. Want to find or make a steel tray to hang under the floor for them. For charging, I have a good quality battery isolator I will attach them to, and also have 4, 55 watt solar panels to go on the nonexistent roof rack. Tonight I started wiring up a power panel for them, so I can put them all on a battery tender until install.

I'm oldskool, and am all about the real tinned brass connectors and solder.

Check out this "High Quality" electrical work I found in the back of the '96 GMC Astro I liberated a bunch of parts from.

Finished up the Rock-n-Roll bed extension today. Welded it up, ground it smooth and primered it. Next is to Mack the backing plates for under the van floor and to paint this frame black and mount it.

Holy baby Jeebus riding a unicycle!

Dawgboy, will you PLEASE stop showing all the neat things you are doing to your vehicle? it's making some of us(okay, maybe just me) feel very unworthy because we all aren't making the awesome progress that you are.

BTW, if this behavior continues I will be forced to park my incredibly cool(here urban sobs just a bit) DoomRunner bugout van on top of yours, and then use it as a very cool pedestal.

You bastage.

The curse of having a project car. You could finish it next week and still think "Eh, if I hadn't goofed off so much I'd have had it done a few days earlier"...

Final coat of black paint. Needs to dry but it's done! Just need to bolt it back together, drill and mount.

Dangit!

Locks are wrong...

Image

Don't even fit in the holes... I might be able to get a refund though.

Also got the spare mounted today. It's a used tire, but that's because I'm planning to go to a 15" rim and don't want to spend a Tom of money on something I will be tossing within the next year.

Today is my dads 87th birthday. He is the dude that gave me the desire and skills to want to wrench on old iron. In many ways, we are very different, but in some, we are the same. Here he is, and here are some of his projects. He does 90% of the fabrication himself, with help of course from my brother and I. Paint is the one thing he farms out...

1930 Austin 7 "Chummy". Shipped from Australia to the US. It's the current resytore Project and is in pieces right now. The body work is being farmed out to the El Capitan High school Auto shop in Lakeside CA. Mechanics are all done.
Image

Image

1936 Cadillac Fleetwood Convertible V8. This was a 6 year frame-up resto woith some rust reapair and a LOT of fabrication for the roof structure. Also, he cast the door handles and bumper parts himself.

Image

Image

Image

1927 Cadillac Touring car. This was a 1980's frame up Restore By Jim Renzuli, that my dad bought not running and did a complete drivetrain restore plus some paint and Nickel Plate work (No chrome)
I love driving this. It will cruise the freeway just fine, and has done Cadillac Tour of California.

Image

Image

1929 Graham Paige 827 Limousine. Converted by Howard MacGee along with 12 others in 1930 for the Publix Theater chain(Paramount Pictures) as parade cars. There are 23 others left, 1 in Portland, one in Florida, and one in Boston.
