The Dawgvan: 64 Dodge "Bug out Van"

Post by Dawgboy » Wed Jun 16, 2010 11:02 am

This was just given to me. It's a 1964 Dodge van with the slant 6. Engine was rebuilt less than 5 years ago and has been sitting for the last year. Needs some interior work but it is mostly straight and has no rust. Plus it only has 93k miles as it never left the compound.

Yes, it was free!

Edit: Changed thread name to reflect what I really call the van. The Observatory gave the van that name as the letters were falling off the back and it just said "DO G" on the back for a lot of years... kismet, I tell you

SCORE!
Man, I'm jealous now. Even tho it's ALMOST as old as I am....
This stands to it's advantage tho, as it won't have the electronic parts that make the newer stuff vulnerable to EMP. Plus, the slant 6 is a virtually bullet proof engine- just make sure you keep oil in it. The bat-wing side doors is also a plus, as they tend to have less problems than the slider style.

Hey dude, if it applies, then it remains a classic. Like SPAM, hotdogs, and fart jokes. :D

Keep your ears to the ground. In the last 6 months I scored a well running jeep Wagoneer for $500.00, and this old van for free.

My brother scores old tiny travel trailers for free or for very little money all the time. He drives around looking for them in fields and drags 'em home and sells them on ebay.

"RIP Shaggy, Freddie, and Daphne"- I love it. It also goes to show that monster/horror movies have got the formula correct- I'm sure that Daphne and Fred got it while making out, and lets face it, the stoner is always one of the first to go.

Awesome find! I'd love an old van like that to make into a proper BOV!

All it needs is some paint and a DHARMA logo or two!

I really wish I had the room for a fun, rugged BOV at my place. My driveway is literally only 20' long.

nice man, can't beat free, for sure!

don't dress it up too much, you'll make yourself a target. right now you have a lot of capacity and most people would look at it and think its not even in running condition and pass on.

have fun with it!

I think they look cool with the rat rod look myself, flat primer black paint with some scroll work, red steelies with the chrome center caps and white walls. 8)

Got plans for it all right.

First thing is get all the paint buckets out and then the bumpers are off and the cage is out. It has a very heavy steel divider between the front and back. Then the seats are out and to a local upholsterer to be rebuilt if I can't find something that will fit at the boneyard. Going to pull the roof rack too and rebuild it flat(Eventually) for gear instead of 3 ladders.

Then I am going through it mechanically and swapping all fluids, going to check brakes, bearings and tie rods, water pump, wiring.

Then I am building in a bed, a cabinet, and some sort of an extra seat. Thinking of a cj back seat and making some sort of quick release so I can toss it out the door when camping.

All that but the roof rack I intend to have done before September.

Somewhere along the way I will get some shiny rims for it.

Then get the dents out, just two! Wet sand and prime and pick a two-tone paint job.
