There is some bad news though: Dusty's rear window is busted. Warranty replacement application has been sent in - the fix is to replace the entire top. I'm not thrilled about this, but life goes on. If turned down I have a plan to deal with it - I give it about 50-50 odds.

Seems to me you need one more decal... for the hood. Then it doesn't matter if the doors are on or off. :)

I know, right? I'm debating it. Maybe after I replace the hood because I'd hate to decal it twice...

Next time you replace the decals, consider getting them done in black reflective. (Reflects white at night) They'll cost a bit more (about 2-3x) but are much more visible after dark.

if i may offer a few suggestions on some of what i been reading ,
Living in south florida and owning jeeps for years , first i was wondering why you didnt just go with a 2" spacerlift & new shocks , instead of airbags ,air bags will fail and if your gonna considering using your jeep as your ZORV. you want dependability :) and no headaches . the 2" spacer lifts are very inexpensive and tera-flex makes a great 1 , for your jeep , i know because i have the same 1 . yeah its a bit of work getting the lift installed , but anyone that can turn a wrench can do it . not to mention there is way less aggravation involved , no air to have to worry about nothing , not to mention you would get a much better aggressive looking stance apperance and a smoother ride . i have pics if your interested in seeing 1 installed . i have done this particular lift 4 times and i installed it on my JK last year .
i guarantee you if you install this on your rig your wont ever have to even think or worry about airbag failure ever again .
or aggravate yourself over it . consider getting yourself this lift , its about a 6 hour project to get it installed but i promice you , you will be most impressed how your JK looks and rides after . also this lift works great for the JK install and you WONT have to get a wheel alignment after as you do with most other lift options .
note : if you are gonna do this kick in the extra $52.00 and get yourself the tera-flex steering stabalizer you wont be sorry trust me .
as i said if you would like to see pics of this lift let me know i have it installed on my JK ,
i noticed your posts about the bag failure and the hassles you had but if you had this Boss you'd be Set with zero hassle and headache .
im no sales man im just a long time jeep owner and i know what works well .
i have quit a bit of exp, with this product and you would love it and your Jeep would ride like a mercedes and will accomidate 35's easily with 1.5 off-set spyder-trax .

you can get this Kit for about $500.00 exc. your steering stabalizer . which your def gonna want .
this kit is top quality at an affordable price . which is great
Image

as for the decals if your getting bubbles , let them warm in the sun first then apply them slowly using your DL , or a squeege to press them as you go removing the back layer sheet slowly as you go a lot of people just pull off the back sheet and lay it on the surface hence air bubbles . you can use a needle if necessary to poke a hole in the bubble and then press it down . always worked for me and i have installed many for our club members .

as far as your Jack selection : High-lift jack is a great choice there is so much you can do with them and your mounting options on a jeep are endless , also suggestion here , bullet jacks work great also and take up lil room in your jeep a lot of our jeep club members swear by them .

uuummm your : cargo rack selection . from what i saw that was the steel one . many folks down here in south florida opt for the alum.1
reasons ...... lightweight , durable as all get out , wont rust or corrode . also you can order 1 from harbour frieght for much less then you paid for your steel 1 . i own the alum 1 and never once had an issue with it .
you can get this 500pd capacity cargo rack for $94.00 even less with a 20% off store coupon
Image

Tire selection : if you are considering BFG's ...or Grapplers etc i beleive i read take a look at the ( Mickey Thompson MTZ's ) just a suggestion , i have these and yes they have a very aggressive apperance but
the ride they offer is Just excellent ....smooth and easy handeling. and their offroad ability is great
Image

if you want a serious ZORV./ bugout vehicle i see your on the right track and made some super great choices for your JK...... however if you dont mind a few fine tuning suggestions to save you some headaches down the road with my experience i can suggest some great gear choices to help ya out if you dont mind a few suggestions . :)

No lift at this time. I still have some warranty left and if I lift it I'll want bigger meats now, not later and the dealership has informed me they will invalidate the powertrain if I go that route (see earlier discussion on that one). I'm not saying I agree or disagree but I do see their point. Also, and more importantly, My Gal Friday (my money manager) would have a fit. Down the road a long arm lift will be going in. At this time I like the Rock Krawler X Factor but I'm considering a replacing the springs with an AiROCK system. Reasoning: decent sized tires with a lower highway stance and the bags can empty out entirely when you turn the engine off, nice feature for a guy with knee issues to have.

I'm not sure on the compatibility of these two systems but it will be at least 3 years before I go this route so plenty of time.

I got the steel rack because it will be a future welding project and by all accounts I've read you have to be extremely skilled or practice witchcraft to weld aluminium well and I'm not up for that. Related: I need to learn welding. :ohdear:

Thanks for the decaling tip. I'll be sure to use it next time and I'm sure there will be a next time. Shiney objects and attention span of a gnat and all that... :D

Tires are coming up. I'm getting a new set before winter and I'm likely to go with a summer and winter set. I'm not finding a tire that preforms better in the winter conditions I'm going to be dealing with than the Duratrack on the reviews I've found (mainly street, some mud, plenty of snow and ice and despite the weather I'm on a deadline so traction trumps weight and looks).

I'm always open to suggestions. In that spirit, here are some upcoming projects (through the end of the year):
  • H3R Performance HalGuard Extinguisher: fire is good, fire in the engine compartment not so much
  • Daystar Hood Wranglers: ditch the hood flutter (on order)
  • Rear license plate bracket: I had an oops.
  • VDP Locking Hidden Storage Vault: toss this in the "smuggler's compartment" (my term) and have a secure place to put things that need to be out of sight.
  • Dietech Mirror Brackets: Keeps mirrors in stock location when I go doorless.
  • Lug Nut Lights: Replace the 3rd brakelight with 2 LED's stuffed into the 2 empty holes on the spare. (note: not sure on this one at all)
  • CB Radio: requirement for the 4x4 club.
  • Truck Bed Extender: get the canoe off the soft top.
  • Snorkel: Nothing says brainless like hydrolocking a motor.
Feel free to sound off on any of these. I'll argue but it doesn't mean I won't listen - that's how I process what's most likely to work and more than once a point someone made caused me to change my mind 2 days after sprited discussion.

EtA: I'll know at the end of the week if I'm getting a new top from the factory or if I'm going to My Gal Friday for about a grand. If the warranty falls through on this, and it easily could and I won't fight it if it does, I'm looking at a Bestop Sailcloth in Diamond Khaki, which means I'll also need to replace the uppers.

IMO keeping your vehicle well will make it last longer, and that includes simple stuff like appearance. Half the problems I have with my Jeep are in my own head because something is just a tad off and I want it done right.

pretty good choices , the snorkel will offer your engine water protection ....not to mention you cant go wrong with the cool air flow intake it will offer and it will increase your horsepower because your jeep will breath better . i would also consider fine tuning that mod by modifying your exhaust to a magna-flow system , and get rid of the factory exhaust , you will see a better horsepower increase here also , especially with the addition of the snorkel .

heres another cool tip as far as mirrors goes , go to a bike shop and get yourself those small round scooter mirrors they should be the exact size of your outer
a/c vents . and can be easily mounted on the back of the vents ...so doors on or off you always have access to ready made mirrors . a lot of the guys here use them .

I considered that and other relocation brackets but I like the look it has now and other brakets render the passenger side mirror useless.

If I decide at a later date to do turn-signal mirrors I'll use the stock mirrors for the brackets. If not it's just 2 more bolts to undo and put on per mirror when the doors come off so... 5 minutes with hand tools once I'm used to it?

Just north of $80 including shipping.

Thank you.

LT255/75R17 (32.1 x 10.00), standard on Rubicon.

Since DuraTrac isn't offered in that size, I'm considering going with 265/70R17 (31.6 x 10.40) or 285/70R17 (32.7 x 11.20) or switching to a Silent Armor for winter,but that's a couple months off yet.

On colors, you really can't go wrong with something earth-tone.

Hood latches and mirror brackets arrived Friday and I've done a bit of testing on them. Before I begin, let me say yes, Dusty is, well, dusty. It's been very dry out here and with me going back out onto the gravel roads on Sunday I'm not going to wash it just for a few pics. Now on with the new stuff!

Image
There's a big difference between the old (bottom) and new hood latches. You can see where hood flutter has damaged the old one.

Before installing, make sure it's warmer than 70°F.

Image
Begin installation by using 2 vice grips to twist and break the pin.

Optional: Instructions say to remove the bottom bracket on the hood latch and then use a bench. I believe it's to protect the paint but go careful and you can skip it.

Image
Keep these parts, chuck the rest.

Image
New pins are metal and screw on. It makes it so much easier to replace them as needed.

Image
Easy project that completely eliminates hood flutter and cost under $30 US.

Logo is there but not visible from more than a few feet away. Test drive at 60mph confirmed no hood flutter. The new rubber is much stiffer and it takes an effort to open and close them the first few times, especially the first. Basically big improvement while keeping stock appearance. I got mine from amazon.com. Overall ranking: 5 out of 5 oncoming semi trucks.

Image
When you want to go doorless, start by removing the mirrors.

Image
Installing the mirror on the bracket.

Image
After removing the door I set the bracket in the upper hinge then began loosening the middle bolt on the hinge plate. It doens't need to be loosened more than a turn or 2.

Image
Proper possition of the bracket before tightening the hinge bolt. Use one of the nuts removed from the door to secure the bracket properly.

Image
Image
Bracket looks pretty good, seems very sturdy, and puts the mirror just about right where they were with the doors in. You do have to do a bit of mirror adjustment but when you are driving and go to check them they are right here you expect them to be. You do have to relocate the mirrors everytime you switch from doors on to off or vice-versa. Things to speed this up would include having a second set of mirrors permantly mounted on the bracket and a battery powered screwdriver.

With 2 connection points and some sturdy welds these look like the right option when compared to other relocation brackets, though switching from doors on to off is a time consuming affair.

They perform like advertised and I ordered them directly from Die-Tech for around $80 with shipping. Given that I want to go doorless when subbing for in-town papers these are a work item for me and should serve well. A solid 5 out of 5 "So that's what was in my blind-spot." for now. I will be revising this when I trail-test them, likely next year.

The thing I love about the brackets is the mirrors are just about where they are with the doors on and I like them there. Other relocation brackets move the mirrors forward so you don't have to put them back on/remove them from the doors every single time, but that renders the passenger side mirror next to useless. That may not bother most folk but it bothered me.

There was 0 hood flutter at 70mph on paved road and 0 flutter on washboard gravel at 50mph. I love the new latches.

Soft top was approved and ordered. The top itself is backordered but the new uppers and some soft top care products should arrive this week. When the uppers arrive I'll take a photo - new look and all that. :ooh:

Be prepared to make the acquaintance of your local game warden in the future then, because someone, somewhere, will mention to him "the guy in the jeep spotlighting out in the boonies early in the morning".
