Yup. Same engine in the Audi 4000 and the '79 vw rabbit, but modified to run on shittier gas found where these things were used. The Iltis was actually the father of the Audi Quattro system.

Fear the A4LD!

But that 2.3 will last you a LOOONNG time when you get it going. And swapping the A4LD with an M5OD standard transmission isn't difficult, if you're so inclined.

Found out today that the computer controlled carb is going to be a bit more difficult to work around,
i was going to be swapping an engine with a non CC carb ('74 pinto 100hp 2.0) but the carb appears to be tied into everything.
The gauges, the ignition, even the charging system goes through the carb computer before anything else.

If there was a cheap easy way to get rid of the mess that the CC carb causes to reside under my hood,
I'd do it in a second. But there doesn't appear to be one.
Any help/advice other than rewiring the whole truck is appreciated.
J
Oh and it has a C-3 trans, trans outlasted the engine which suprises every mechanic I talk to.

Convert everything back to non-computer controlled? I'd even go as far as pulling the instrument cluster and installing my own individual hard run gauges. I love non-CC stuff, it would be worth it to me. Might need a transmission swap. If you ripped everything out and only wired in what you needed, it wouldn't be that complex. A vacuum operated carb with a basic points style ignition doesn't need anything but a power feed to the coil to run. A basic charging system only needs a switch (already provided by the ignition switch), an alternator, a battery, and some heavy gauge wire. You could probably get away with not touching the exterior lighting at all. If you had a complete doner vehicle, it would be easy. Not drop in easy, but old motors are pretty easy to figure out. You'll learn a ton about the truck. The learning is worth more to me than the end result.

Heck, '84 isn't that old, I bet you can find a parts truck and restore the original equipment.

Ask on therangerstation.com . That forum is the authority for everything rangers. The tech section is very good too. Might not need to go with a motor/system swap, I bet someone knows a way to get a normal carb on there.

One Owner 1996 Ford Explorer 5.0 V8 AWD she's fully loaded, dual power seats and power everything, the sliding and raising sunroof, roof rack, all that good jazz. Clarion CD/MP3 player. Speakers work better and louder than anything stock i've ever heard :D And previous owner was nice enough to install a K&N Cold Air Intake. Small tear in the driver seat, almost null amount of rust just above the drivers side rear door running board. 120,000 miles. KBB rates it at over $5,000 in excellent condition got it just over $2,000 with a just around the corner need for brake pads and she could use a tune up. Runs pretty smooth though.

Just picked it up earleir today. 4x4 2.9L 5-speed. Soon as I pay back anotheroldfart for it's purchase (Just started a new job after a year and a half of unemployment and needed soemthing to get to and from work) I'll be gathering parts for an engine swap of some kind. Most likely a 4.0L, so I don't have to dink around with swapping the transmission and all that entails as well.

I don't believe it'll be available commercially until 2015, but I'll definitely be saving my pennies for when it becomes available.

Apparently there's just 3 minor upgrades/changes for it to be fully functional on bio-diesel.
