New Gloves Are On Order
Why?
Because my son's school apparently does not provide any gloves whatsoever when they dissect things.
Yes, I know the sheep's heart was soaking in formaldehyde.
They should still be wearing gloves and safety glasses (preferably goggles), at a minimum.
Even if it isn't dangerous.
*headdesk*
Yes, my box of 100 non-latex gloves went to school with him.
Plus a smaller packet with 2 pairs in case he didn't get any of the box, for some reason.
Some first aid things are useful even when it isn't for first aid...or TEOTWAWKI

Did they maybe remove it from the Formaldehyde and switch it to high grade alcohol?CG wrote:Why?

No idea. The science teacher just sent a message saying that we could send in gloves if we would like, but "There is nothing on the heart that will cause harm to their hands."SCBrian wrote: Did they maybe remove it from the Formaldehyde and switch it to high grade alcohol?

Honestly, if I was the teacher I would be more worried about a student eating part of one on a dare than touching them.

And if it's my kid that's dumb enough to do that, he has a world of videos awaiting him...

Yea but you were never a teenage boy in High School. They can be really dumb. I remember being one.
I would def tell him not to eat one and explain why that's a bad idea, don't just say it's bad. Cause you know what will happen..

Except that formaldehyde is a known carcinogen.

this has been known for years. I am unsure why recently it has been changed to "possibe"
oh yeah, our EPA sucks and is nothing more more than a money pit. I hope that wasn't too political of a statement.
Make sure that they are not Latex gloves or they may not allow them in the school due to latex allergies.

Non-latex. Because I don't like itching.doitnstyle1 wrote:Except that formaldehyde is a known carcinogen.

That's why I asked. I know standard practice 20 odd years ago for us non-scientific types was to 'cure' in formaldehyde then transfer over to high proof alcohol. I'm not concerned with the heart as much as I'm concerned with the formaldehyde. Is it possible, it's a "fresh" heart? then I wouldn't have any issues, it's just meat.doitnstyle1 wrote:Except that formaldehyde is a known carcinogen.

Re: New Gloves Are On Order
Costco sells lovely big boxes of either non-latex or latex gloves. I used to include them in my puke-cleaning kit when I drove a cab.

Re: New Gloves Are On Order
There are two brands that you can order at any pharmacy:
Halyard: nice because it has an extended cuff.
Kimberly-Clark
Both are Nitrile
Equally important is how to remove dirty gloves. Pinch the glove.
on the back of your hand and remove it. You now have the clean
side of the dirty glove. Use that to remove the other dirty glove.

If it's wet and it's not yours don't touch it.
Glove up for that stuff. Even a "safe" dissection.
