new addition to the fak? anyone else?

Postby Dlongmuir » Tue Jul 31, 2012 5:42 pm

OK so i have terrible allergies in spring stuffy runny nose yadayada :words: so i spoke to my doctor about "releaving" congestion . Basically he told me to pick up this
http://i1142.photobucket.com/albums/n61 ... c6e7ff.jpg

Basically salt water that you shoot thru your nose with a bottle thingy.....it works great although....a tad bit unpleasent. But definitely a reccomindation for your long term faks it can clean out dust and such say after a fire?
Anyone else used it? Or any questions about it lemme know.

Have used normal saline spray for decades. Just the thing for a stuffed nose. Good for cleaning out minor wounds and general FAK stuff.

I use it, and a doctor friend of mine highly recommends it for nasal issues. I wouldn't put it in a standard FAK due to how huge the bottle is, but it's definitely helpful for daily stuff.

The bottle mine came with was relitivley small and the saline packets could be stored in the bottle. I don't think it is neccesary for a standerd fak but I have a bigger fak that goes into my long term bug out bag (pics for fak will be posted soon)

Inside a FAK? Maybe. I place mine inside my toiletry bag instead. Then again, I keep NS bags inside my FAK, but nasal rinsers are damn life savers.

Great stuff. It is a regular staple at my house and in my backpack. Now I know this next thing I am about to say is a little weird, but it works... If you run out of saline nasal spray... use visine. It actually works just as well. Weird, I know, but I only discovered it when I got desperate at one point out on the trail. Visine is actually just saline drops for the eyes basically so I figured why not and used it and it worked out just fine.

Better check the label if you use Visine, they have all sorts of formulas.

True. The specific bottle I had in my bag the day I gave it a go was straight saline solution, and I don't think it was Visine brand name, it was some other off brand but since I couldn't remember the name of it and everyone knows what "Visine" is it was just easier to throw that brand out there. I know they have all kinds of different formulas out there that treat everything from just dry eyes to allergies so I agree with ZombieGranny, always check the label and make sure it doesn't have anything like potassium chloride and tetrahydrozoline hydrochloride which is a vasoconstrictor, That might not be such a good combination to be sticking up your nose. Of course, lots of people stick lots of things up their nose so if a person could shove a rail of cocaine that is refined using gasoline and is usually cut with any variety of substances but baby laxative or vitamin B being most common, laundry detergent is in there sometimes too, but if people can stick that in their noggin then maybe potassium chloride and tetrahydrozoline hydrochloride wouldn't be such a bad turn. Probably better than cocaine anyway.

I agree whenever I am near a flower or a poll on death trap I lose a few years of my life from the sneezing lol that's why I would keep one in my fak plus it also helps with sinus infections but don't quote me on that.

I don't keep one in my FAK but I use one almost daily for sinus issues. It really does help keep you from getting sick in the first place and clearing up things like sinus infections and even colds a bit quicker.

Is it basically what I call a netti pot? Fill it with water and the salt packed then let the grossness ensue? I could see the value in carrying that in a squeeze bottle form especially with double duty as wound irrigation.

Yeah, same thing as a neti pot, just in squeeze bottle form. It's nice for regular use because you don't have to tilt your head quite as much as for a pot, I think; I just bend forward over the sink then tilt my face up to either direction maybe 60 degrees and use the pressure of the squeeze bottle to irrigate up one nostril and out the other.

I don't know if anyone has posted this advice yet, but one very important part to keeping this in your bag is to boil the water first, especially if you're using some random water source. People have died by injecting bacteria into their sinus cavities and then causing a massive brain infection.

Also, as to using Visine - there was recently a woman who was convicted of murder for adding Visine drops to her boyfriend's drinks. The chemicals built up in his system and ended up killing him. If you're shooting a bunch of it up your nose, you're bound to ingest some of it. Food for thought.

I use bottled distilled water, then microwave it per the instructions.
