You can do either one. It seems like every big city has a ham shop. In my area, we have one but many people buy from one in Alabama to save on sales tax and their prices are usually lower to begin with. But unlike the local one, where you can just walk in and they'll make recommendations for you, you pretty much have to know what you're wanting to order. For used, ham fests and ebay is popular. If you want to try to get used, rather than ebay, I think the best thing to do is see what people locally have for sale. Perhaps in a local club.
