June 28th and 29th is the annual ARRL field day event. The object is to work as many stations as possible on any and all amateur bands (excluding the 60, 30, 17, and 12-meter bands) and in doing so to learn to operate in abnormal situations in less than optimal conditions. A premium is placed on developing skills to meet the challenges of emergency preparedness as well as to acquaint the general public with the capabilities of Amateur Radio. I'd like to propose that we activate a ZS net during this time frame, on say 40 meters sometime Saturday evening, and maybe try 20-meters on Sunday during the day. If you are interested send and email to broihiermg@yahoo.com and I'll put it together. If you want to find out more about Field Day go to: http://www.arrl.org/contests/announcements/fd/

Out,

There are some preparedness type nets already running that I know of, thought some members might want to know about.
There's the Eastern Regional Patriots Net (ERPN) on ~3.860 at 8pm EST.
And the ARFCOM net on 7.213 at 9pm EST. This is actually a conglomeration of people that migrated through several forums (frugal squirrel, war-rifles, ect.)
I'll be on at 9 most nights.

This past weekend was the ARRL sponsored Field Day exercise. We set up an HF station running 100-watts into a dipole antenna strung between two trees about 25-feet off the ground. Our operation was cut short because of severe electrical storms but in two hours we contacted 25-stations in 15-states and two Canadian provinces.

Ham radio still works and in many disasters is the only reliable local and regional immediately available. Field Day is a great way to test your preparedness, so next year watch this forum for info on the 2009 exercise which will be held, as always, over the 4th weekend in June.

Your latitude and longitude: 42.21 N, 122.52 W

Your particular interest: Long Range Station

Your equipment situation: Nothing yet, I just found out about all this today. And unfortunately, it seems that there are no ARRL licensing classes in Oregon. Any ideas?

It's easy to study on your own. Get the ARRL Tech license manual and take practice exams online (qrz.com has a great one) then go take the exam :)

You're talking 10m right? what class of FCC license do you have? I only ask because you're limited to 200W and a very small hunk of 10m with some licenses. Anything more than 200W PEP is breaking federal law.

If you're talking about CB bands, you're totally illegal with any amplifier, because CB is limited to 4W on AM and 12W on SSB.

Yeah, CB is limited to 4W on AM, and 12W on SSB.

Putting an amplifier on it is totally illegal. Additionally it doesnt make your radio any more sensitive, so the only people you can talk to with one are other people breaking the law with their own 100w 'leaner' amps.

Go to www.w5yi.org
Order the books By Gordon West. Gordo makes it really easy.
Read the books, take the online tests at www.qrz.com

I tested 11/15/2008
Took all 3 tests at one sitting
Technician scored 35 out of 35 questions
General scored 35 out of 35 questions
Extra scored 43 out of 50 questions

Nothing to Extra (highest amateur license) in 1 testing. Took about 2 months of studying part time while working 12 hrs/day 7 days a week. Nothing to it.

El Campo, TX
Radio ICOM IC-7000
Tuner LDG AT7000
Antenna Alpha Delta DX-CC at 44 feet in the center and 12 feet on the ends as an inverted V. Works great
