I think trail blazes (at least for the US, other countries I believe have their own systems) would also be useful. (Phpbb doesn't seem to speak SVG, so I can't post directly.)

More fantastically, I think Fallout 4 railsign could be adapted usefully, with an internal icon indicating the "signal" and using the "asterisk" to indicate direction (e.g. by saying north is up, and omitting the relevant direction(s)):

I have known hobo codes for literally decades and have never see a real live one. YMMV

There are however in NOLA graffiti tags that are in use. Some are street gang related others are not. Generally they are claims to the territory or warnings.

I suspect that like dialects there is a lot of regional variations.
