Craft Projects for Pantry Organisation and Food Can Rotation

Postby Katica » Thu Jul 05, 2012 1:03 pm

As much as I want one of the Shelf Reliance canned food rotation systems (Seen here), I don't have the kind of space or money needed for that at this point in my life.

So I decided to try making my own!

Last night I made my own cardboard can rotator using the plans found on this website. I used a glue called Hi-Tack which is a tacky craft glue that dries fairly quickly. I let it set up over night and this morning I tried rolling some cans through it. It worked! It didn't fall apart! Hooray!

I haven't decorated it but I plan to paint or decoupage it soon to make it prettier and sturdier. When it is finished I will post photos up for you to see. If I get on a roll with this, I'll post a photo tutorial and if we can find a way to host the PDF plans, we'll always have a reference here for how to make our own can rotators.

Next up, while googling around for my craft projects for pantries, I found this project for organisers made from tin cans. So pretty! I love the one with the bird. This'll be a nice way to recycle the #10 cans I have leftover from coffee (because I can only make so many camp stoves out of them.)

As for the tin-can hobo stoves, there are many designs out there but mine is very much like this. It's simple and you can use many types of fuel in it.

Zombie Granny has a huge cache/list of can storage racks - maybe she'll put that up as well.

We use the plastic snap-together racks, work great and allow us to mix and match when needed. About the only thing it won't work with is tuna fish cans.

Thanks for posting the links, rotation is a big deal if one is to begin stocking large amounts of canned food...

This is true! I like to cook from scratch but I like to keep a supply of staples like canned coconut milk, chickpeas, mango puree, etc. This'll make it so much easier for me to know that I don't have some 5-year-old can of pumpkin festering on a back shelf somewhere.

Now I just need to get all my dried stuff moved into canning jars and I'll be all set....I have one shelf of mason jars already for my lentils and dried mushrooms. It looks so pretty.

Thanks for both posting. I've been meaning to make the units for a while now but keep losing my instructions.

Er? You talking about the plastic Cansolidator? Which Tuna cans do you mean? We have one of these racks and "standard" Tuna cans fit fine if you space the rack out for them. Now the bigger wonky sized ones might not work, dunno. Never tried those, we get our tuna t Sam's in a multi-pack of the regular sized tuna cans. If you want I can take a pic (minus tuna cans, sadly we're out) and tell you the exact "spacing" between the pieces.

Please and thank you.

Everything I could find on-line showed putting two cans together, then the pair went in the rack. Not a bad product for the price.

You can see the empty spot where tuna cans go on the right hand side here:

And the spacing looks like 6 to me. 13 minus 7 is 6, right? So if you space one at six it should fit a standard sized tuna can perfectly.

Will be attempting to make a few tomorrow. Need to get organized for when I start re-stocking my stock in a couple of weeks.
