I live two hours south of Lexington and travel there every other month to setup at the gun show, and I drive within 1/4 mile of this place and had no idea. I'll be paying them a visit real soon.

I found them for 50$ in east county San Diego. Seems with "fire season" they sell tons of these things about an hour from me. Looks like i need to get me some tools for that project sooner rather than later.

I've seen these on craigslist and even in junk store parking lots but I'm very leery of what these were in a previous life. How do people tell if the containers they are buying are safe for water storage?

Creek Rat, they tell you before you buy what they were used for.
Kelvar Jr. and I met up with KYZHunters over there today and he made some nice purchases. Note to self...bring cash or checkbook next time...
I snapped some pictures to make you folks from other states jealous.

Good seeing Kelvar and Kelvar, Jr., this morning. The two tanks I bought were used to store soybean oil. There were other tanks that were used to store liquid yeast. The owner told us that he has been getting a lot of traffic from preparedness minded people, including some church groups that are negotiating group purchases. Starting next week he will be stocking mylar storage bags, oxygen absorbers and desiccants. You can see from Kelvar's pix that this place is clean and on the up and up.

If it's food grade it should be good for water storage. You'll have to clean them though which is a bitch.

Will do. Planning the route now. Looks like I can take Hwy 68 most of the way which is nice. Sucks I was in that area back in June. We were coming back from a vacation to the Red River Gorge and we were in the truck to boot. Oh well.

Thanks for the link. Time to make the drive to my KY office and then have them motorfreight my goodies back to old Virginnie.

The reseller near me advertises that his barrels contained corn sweetner. Its about the best you can ask for when recyling something like this for potable water. I would definately ask though, because I've seen a hundred different chemicals(most of them toxic) in those things.

By golly you're right. A local vendor is selling six of them for $85 each. Bet I could talk him down if I bought all six.

For anyone near the Dayton, OH area, here is a local shop selling all the same products. It's the CL listing for his barrels but his warehouse has the rest. I got 2 of these barrels to make a compost tumbler and aluminum can storage and they were previously occupied by liquid smoke from a local bacon factory. The drive back from his shop was erotic...

These are roughly the same price in California. You can pick them up in Ontario for those interested. Check Craigslist dudes.

PM sent. You just need to look around. Craig's List FTW. I know it's not as heavily used down in San Diego as it is up in the bay area where I used to live. It is a wonderful resource. As is freecycle.

Just paid $110 for mine, best price I could find around here. Its for fish so I cleaned it out with oxiclean, not bleach. Over the winter it will store my 10" koi from the pond thats too shallow for overwintering. This spring I will use it for an aquaponics experiment. I'm thinking channel catfish and several types of lettuce.
