I made a list of food items suitable for a "72 hour kit" (ours are longer after suffering a week without power after Irene) and purchased some of the items on the list in bulk. I usually keep food stores for emergencies, but I want my kids to learn to be better prepared, so one project they will be doing this summer is building their own "72 hour" kits. With every paycheck, I will purchase more items on the list and one of the kids' summer projects will be to put their kits together.

One of my sons also did a little prepping today:

- Planted some fruit trees. Cherry, apple, peach.
- Mulch/compost the third garden area per http://backtoedenfilm.com/how_to/index.html
- Got a 275 IBC rain tank collector (need to prepare this next for a foundation base and hook-up.)
- Garden in for the first growing season. Second season almost here. Third a few months away yet.
- Sold the last desktop computer from the home. Hurray! Only laptop powered units now. These do well on solar!

Yesterday I did six cases of water. One for me, five for the cache. I got where I am drinking Crystal Light, trying to shed some pounds. So everytime I go to the store to get more bottled water, I will buy several cases for my prepps. Water is the one thing I am slim on. So this is a good step in the right direction.

Not specifically today but I did plant an apple tree and a Tangerine tree over the weekend. The dog promptly ate the tangerine tree. :|

Kid's Preparedness:
-nearly done with the second kid's room as we prepare for the arrival of Smueling #2

Basement:
- made up some more room and added heavy duty shelves. Those are for (more) food storage and storing items that you need in a house but not in the main- or bedrooms.
- Redoiing my workshop for more space and better usability. I am in the middle of the process, but this will be kewl.

Filled my 15 gallon water container and moved my bug out things to to the front of the garage so they are more easily loaded into my truck. As far as my actual house goes I'll be building a new 6x6 garden box today or tomorrow.

Upgraded my handheld scanner to a radio-shack Pro-164 (I know, not much, but compared to what I have, it was an upgrade), plus I can listen to all my local agencies now on it, which is all I really need.

Got another charger for my SF RC batteries, so now I can charge 4 cells at once.

Also upgraded my Surefire Helmet Light from an older White/Blue model to a newer model in White/Red.

Got caught up on life so I can start planning my next project. Probably something food dehydrator related but not sure.

Love mine! Life's a little hectic right now though, so it doesn't see much use, but when I do, it's fun, and the food is awesome!

-Finished the barrel portion of my barrel planter project, totalled out at I think 20 moderately large planter pockets. Just need to drill holes in some PVC and fill 'er up with my remaining soil mix. It's a wee late, but I'm going to see how some lettuces and other things do in it this year.

-Bought a Golden State Arms 1941 Supreme, .303 British. $145 in good shape. Im going to buy some rounds for it, become somewhat proficient, and call it a backup rifle or a buddy rifle. If SHTF, I foresee my brother running up here, and it'll be in my interest to arm him. And besides that, pretty cool gun! I've been wanting an Enfield for a while, and this basically fulfills that desire.

-Girlfriend and I packaged up another 50lb of wheat and 25 of oats. Lentils and beans are next, along with laying up some salt, vinegar, and baking soda.

My husband got several wooden pallets from work. These are great around the house. We used them to build our chicken coop and if I can talk him into it we will use them to build our duck pen too... His work had more than pallets they also had several 2X4 pieces of various sizes and oak planks that are 20 feet long they were getting rid of. He filled up his truck and my parents filled up there's as well. The place he works is happy for us to take them so that they don't have to pay to get rid of them. My parents are going to go back for more of the small stuff to use in their wood heater. He fills up almost every day he leaves work and they still keep coming. He put up some more shelves in my pantry for more stock. We used one of the pallets in the basement for my water storage area. Right now I am using gallon jugs for water. I buy the boxes of gallon jugs and just refill them from the tap as we use them. I also wash out the milk jugs and use them too. We ate squash, okra and tomatoes tonight from our garden. I ordered a Nesco food dehyrator and jerky gun from Amazon last month (paid for with my Swagbucks!) I have dehydrated pineapples and hubby used the jerky gun to make some jerky as well. They both turned out great. I am planning our fall garden right now. Several of the bean plants and squash plants are reaching an end (we have had several days of 100+ degree weather). I pulled up the ones that looked the worse for wear this weekend. I bought a few extra bottles of rubbing alcohol, peroxide and tylenol a few weeks ago. I lucked up and found the Dollar General brand childrens tylenol on sale last week and I got two of them. I can't do too much at once but a little at a time goes a long way. I rearranged our bathroom closets last week to see what he had on hand and what we need to stock up on. I found that we are very low on triple antibiotic cream as well as hydroquartizone cream and bandaids.

Did some water storage today and took began inventory yesterday. Also began working on a hand laundering system (this isn't for Bug in, more like save $$ but it would be needed in a SHTF situation).

Got a second Goal-Zero Nomad-7 Solar Kit. Enough off grid power now to comfortably and efficiently run my "essential" electronics (lighting/communications), as well as some morale items (Ipod, etc.)

Is that a good outfit? My girlfriend is vegetarian by necessity and I need to get more things that she can eat.

Went to Save-A-Lot today and Walmart. Stocked up on some canned goods at SAL. Added more water to our preps. Bought a few cases of canning jars and some Sure-Jell to make some jams/jellies. Went blackberry & blueberry picking at a local Pick-Your-Own farm. It was a nice day!
