Mine's pending (I think). Is there any way to check the status? It took me a while from filling the online application until I could get a money order, so I'm sure that delayed it a bit. Just curious to see where things are at.

Yeah I need to get an "official" membership. I have been putting that off way too long.

Also Farmington is a bit away from Stillwater but I have no problem driving out for a meeting even if it is just to plan the first official meeting. I would like to help as much as possible in getting this chapter going.

Hello everybody, I just stumbled across this link to this thread. Just saw the show on TV tonight about ZS. Love the idea behind it (survival) and believe that in this modern day ,it is very important to know about how to survive. I would be interested in joining a metro area group. I am not very familiar with areas outside of the Twin Cities and not sure how active I could be once the snow starts with locations outside the twin cities, but would like to give it a try.

Welcome Jigsaw. We are in the process of trying to get a chapter going. The seems to be the central thread for it, so keep an eye on it. What area of the Cities are you in?

Also, since you are new, head on over to the Intro Section and formally introduce yourself.

I live in Bloomington, will head over to new person thread now and post. There will be two of us officially joining this weekend. Did not know photos were needed for membership, so have to dig out a camera.

Hello all. Ive got a group of 6 or 7 of us wanting to start a chapter in the La Crosse area before too long. Thats only about 2ish hours from minneapolis, 3ish from milwaukee. Just some ideas we've thrown around for charity events (because as a chapter you need to do a few a year, as well as to get accepted as a chapter which is awesome), we've talked about doing adopt a highway - basically it's cleaning up a 2 mile stretch of highway 3 times a year, also with this you can get your group name on a sign for that portion of the highway. Also, one of our group likes to run...a lot...like marathons and ultra marathons, and he has talked about setting up a charity run of sorts. Also, with this time of year, doing clothing drives, food drives, and toys for tots is always a good thing.

Now, I'm not sure where you all stand in the process of creating a chapter, but I figured i'd share our ideas as of this point to see if we could start up a chapter that would benefit all in our area.

My car club looked into this a few years ago, there was like a 2 year waiting list.

F-it. go grab a stretch of city street and clean it up. amirite? are you saying you need permission to pick up litter? or there is a two year wait for a designated area to clean?

You just about hit the nail on the head! (Although it does have to be organized with someone benefiting (a local organization, etc.)
It should be reallyeasy with Thanksgiving and the Holidays coming up! There are LOTS of charities that could us help from people. Just keep it simple, you can get into larger events later!

Please let me know if I can help!

for a regular road this would probably work, for highway, the dot provides you with reflective vests, and signs warning traffic that there are people working in the area to help prevent you from getting run over. On highways there are actually pretty stringent rules. They way they do it is a group adopts a 2 mile stretch, so if the whole highway is already adopted, they wont send two groups to the same area.

And sadly I could the local police throwing a fit if we did it unannounced. Plus I believe there are special permits you need to have for it as well.

jeesh,

that probably explains the wierd looks I get from the people that co-habit my townhome complex when I spend my saturday morning cleaning up all their crap.

it's good exercise, and the maintenance guy is old as hell. i feel bad for him.

Perhaps everyone could adopt a local senior or disabled person and shovel their walks? i also do that, I dont have a plow truck anymore but I usually make rounds with a shovel and a snow blower and clear em out when I'm not on the road working.

also, a good one is food banks, either a can drive or just volunteering to help sort it all and stock shelves. my mom used to work at the Channel 1 food bank in Rochester, and I spent a lot of time there volunteering.

I still go when the money is tight, and I am glad to have a resource like it in the community.

Please tell me I'm not only weirdo here who thought that line was funny....

But seriously. My current APT, there is very little opportunity for me to do something like this. But in previous places, I did as much of this as possible. Cool thing was, other people saw me doing it, and the next snowstorm, they were out there shoveling.

Talking about what to do over the net is cool, but we need to get together a core of people for a chapter.

btw: due to board rules I won't say what the dnr can go do with themselfs
if all else fails, accelerate!

I've been prone to only taking participation online because of the constraints of my employment.

I travel for work, I spend a good 75% of my time travelling out of MN.

That however will be changing after this month, I've taken a new position with my company and my travel time will be now minimal if ever.

I still have a large amount of my time I need to dedicate to my work, but it will be from home, and I'll be available to start meeting up with people.

Ok if we want to all meet up in person then we need to get 2 things set in stone. Date and Location. Is it even feasible to try and setup a date between now and the end of the year? I know a lot of people usually have many family/holiday things going on. I for one will have a lot going on the second half of December (Wedding anniversary and X-Mas).

And also do we try for a central Minnesota gathering to hopefully bring in the northerners or do we just say screw it for this meeting and just try and get a meeting setup around the cities? It seems like some people want to coordinate the meetings around events going on. I see the reasoning for it but just from past experiences with meetings with my car club I was in, we never got much accomplished with those kinds of meetings. I still think just renting a party room at Davanni's or some other restaurant is a good idea because it is quiet and secluded.

I am applying for my ZS membership when I get home as well.

Cool. I'm still waiting to get mine processed. I'm sure mine got caught up in the clusterfuck of applications that came from the influx of people who saw the History Channel show. Why oh why did I not do mine sooner? :gonk:

Yeah, this time of year could get tough. I'm hunting through this weekend, then work the following weekend, then Thanksgiving, so my November is shot. December is at least one weekend of work, and Christmas...

Probably just go for us in the Cities. Once we get some peeps together down here, we can try to branch north. Maybe do the subchapters sort of thing that was mentioned previously?

I say we try to set something up for January. Get it going now, and give maximum time to plan it and get it on calendars. I can probably still get the last weekend of January off. Anything in February for sure. So that's where I'm at.

Off topic, where is a good FFL down here? Bill's wants to charge 50.... Kinda steep IMO...

Yes it is. My dad's done transfers thru the hardware store for $20, but I want to find something in the cities (ideally) so I don't have to drive all that way just to get a new toy.

My father uses a local small time gunsmith out in Lakeville that charges $25, I'll ask him about it when I see him on Wednesday.
