09' Virginia Camp N Shoot, May 15, 16, 17 2009'

Postby stimpy321972 » Mon Feb 09, 2009 2:37 pm

After meeting a couple of the brothers at the Feb Richmond gun show, we were tossing around the idea of doing a car camping type of meeting sometime in may. This meeting is two-fold one to get to know some of the guys and gals in the VA/MD/DC area; secondly I am adamant about getting a core groups of folks to start a ZS chapter.

So, I am asking for interested people to submit dates in May that they would be available for a weekend campout. The location as of right now is The NorthRiver campgrounds, right outside of Staunton, Va. With state budget cuts going like they are now you never know what sites/campgrounds will be open before the busy summer season.
When I talked to the ranger at Northriver, running water was not going to be available anymore and the number of prepared sites are less than nomal. This is a minor inconvenience, but will add to what we would have to bring in from home.

Ideas of locations would be welcomed also.

This is three months away, so for some, as with me I can't guarrantee which weekends I will be off. My job is making it more and more difficult to take vacation time or switch shifts. However I am making it a personal goal of mine to do something every month to test out myself and my gear. Even if it just a day or two hike somewhere close.

Any constructive feedback will be appreciated;

I work 24-hr shifts on the days marked in red. The 25th is Memorial Day.

For me, the weekends of May 9th-10th or 16th-17th would be the best, but I'll wager the 23rd-24th will be best for most folks because of the holiday on the 25th. Needs of the many, of course. If that's the date we pick I'll try to trade a shift, but don't have great chances of making that happen.

Just gotta see what works best for more people...

I think the North River location looks good, and it's fairly central to VA so the drive shouldn't be too prohibitive for most folks.

yes, JIMBob, I will try to keep everyone posted.

I just need some ideas on dates. I have to put in my request for days off or days I would rather not work, by friday this week. And like I said before they are getting insane about weekends or switching weekends. We used to be overstaffed on weekends because of the weekend "baylor" program, were you worked 32 or 36 and got paid for 40. That program has been axed so everyone wants weekends off now.

So, how about we shoot for the weekend of the 15,16,17th. I would rather not be up there on Mem. Day Weekend. I think because of the financial climate a lot of people, are going to do things inexpensive and fairly close to home, which would include state/national parks.

Maybe JIMBob and some of the chapter folks can get up there for the weekend or at least a day visit to howdy-do everyone.

I am very open to suggestions and/or input.

The 15th-17th of May sounds good to me. Got an idea of where it'll be yet? (Or did I miss that?)

We are tentatively looking at Northwoods Campground, it is outside of staunton, and tentatively looking at the weekend of the 15.

There hasn't been much interests generated from this thread. I am starting to get dissapointed, this is the second year I have tried to get something together in VA and seems like not many people actually want to get out and actuall do something.

I am driving down to GA next month to hook-up with the FLA/GA guys, like last year I drove down to SC for an outing with those guys...

sorry, just pisses me off

Shoot some PMs at the other Virginia folks. Most people don't even bother to check this forum. I didn't ever, really, either until I clicked the link on your sig.

I dunno where Northwoods Campground is, but if it's for a weekend of camping and shooting, I wouldn't mind a bit of a drive. Is there a place close by to do the shooting?

I would be interested In doing this stauntons only about two hours from where I live though me being able to go depends on my wifes ability to drive since I don't have a va license yet or perhaps me catching a ride with someone in exchange for gas money. Either way definitely interested please keep me informed I will also check this thread when I remember to. cheers

Dont despair Stimpy. Maeklos is right, this forum is so far down the tree, no one makes it here. We need to reach out to VA people. I'm in for May camping. I can get any weekend off by trading shifts. Is this going to be one night deal?

I wont really know until a week or two before if I am going to be able to make it, I have to see what's going on with work. Usually that time of year while it's nice out we try to make up for lost time so it's hard to say. I'm Def interested in going though.

On a side note... Since I never travel, especially with guns, is there some law about not crossing state lines with guns?

I think it depends on the state, but you don't have to worry about Virginia. We're a pretty lax state that more-or-less trusts our citizens not to be fucktards.

Yeah,, Virginia as long as it is not loaded and not accessible they don't care. So best case scenario is to have it in your trunk in a case with a lock. Sometimes they will give you a hard time about having a empty magazine in a semi-automatic. Like anywhere depends on the cop/trooper that pulls you over.

I keep mine locked in a case, because it would be harder for them to justify impounding it, which they don't really need a legitimate reason to take it. Then you can fight over the next 6 months up to a couple of years trying to get your firearm back from the cold, damp property room they keep it in. Ask me how I know,,

Magnum,, you are welcome to come,, I hope to get together with everybody before that weekend, just to make sure we don't have any big personality conflicts or concerns amongst us...

Maybe everyone can get together at the tail end of March or somewhere around mid-April when the weather is nice to do some shooting and then chow down on some barbecue.

That sounds good Maek,

I am out for the end of march though, I will be down in Georgia with DTOM and the southeast guys dodging black bears and snakes. April most anytime is good for me.

Mid-April or so would be good, then. And, as I seem to recall, March is usually when we end up getting a crazy-ass blizzard that blows up from nowhere. So, shooting, BBQ, and beers. I'll have to check what weekend it is in April when the National Gunshow swings by again, and hit it before I head back down that way, see if I can't pick up another rifle to complement my SKS.
