I apologize, NFA but I must back out for this weekend. I was sick last week and took two days off work. That was basically enough of a financial setback to make it unwise to take the trip.

Apologies to anyone who cared that I was going!

Sorry to hear that Rush2112, but I certainly understand, and hope that we'll see you for the next NNY Camping Trip, maybe in the summer, when we can try out our lighter gear...and maybe some canoeing/kayaking...

Just to bump the list to this page:

Final list:

Festus
NFA
Famine
Common
Sam
Sams Roomate
OutOfOrder2Day
Impus

I'm bringing too much stuff, but given our unpredictable weather (and the fact that we'll be pretty close to the cars), I'm comfortable with having some extra stuff (food, gear, clothes) to share if need be...

Do we have confirmation from Impus? Does he know where the new camp site is?

I gotta admit, I've been known to wake up with snow on a tent, but this trip will be a little lower in temp than I've yet experienced. Just checked weather.com, low on Friday -5 w00t!

I did sleep in a car once where it got down to 6 or so. Was amazed how frosted/iced my windshield and windows were, on the INSIDE. Took quite a while to defrost. Incidentally that was just the sleeping bag- no extra layers or whatnot. I'll have an extra polarfleece bag if anyone needs it... in the past I've used blankets and comforters as additional layers when needed. As I always say at work, "I'd rather be looking AT it than looking FOR it."

Suspect if there's any breeze, we'll be WISHING our tents were airtight enough that condensation would be an issue. Especially those of us in 3-season wonders (yikes that's me!).

Rush, sorry to hear you can't make it. I developed a nasty head cold on Monday but somehow kicked the symptoms already. Probably the wife's magic Reiki chicken soup. Got most of my stuff packed here in the living room and once I hit send, will be throwing the chili in the slow-cooker. Hope y'all don't mind spicy...

Fricken psyched. Thanks for arranging this, NFA.

Thanks for the info on head outside of bag. I thought it would be better crammed inside, but I see how humid breath could cause an issue. But question; would I have the same condensation occuring inside my tent with my head out? The exterior of my bag is waterproof, but not by very much. Interior rain in the tent would be a bad omen.

Nfa! Nfa! Nfa! Nfa! Nfa!

Yeah, Im stowing some extras in my trunk just in case. Extra sleeping bag, spare tent, and prolly a bunch-o-maruchan. Two sixers of bottled water too (frozen them twice already, no leaks). Reminds me, how should I plan to handle my water? Ill be bringing two full nalgenes in for the first night, but might have to borrow a large-ish pot from someone to melt snow in the mornings to replentish the supply, as it would take forever with my little 2c mess cup.

Oh, and also, seating. Would it be bad form to bring one of those collapsing tailgating chairs? Or should I man up and just tote the CrazyCreek?

I'm bringing water, but figure that we can also chop a hole in the pond (which is feet from where we'll be camping) and get some water from there as well...chilly fingers...

I'm bringing a folding camping chair, if for nothing else than for the movies we'll be watching (sweet, sweet zombie flicks on a tiny TV/DVD run through the good graces of my Honda Element)...

Just saw forecasted winds for Friday night at 10-15mph, with gusts of 30mph, and a high in the low teens Saturday.

Thats it, Im calling this one. Those who survive NNY08WCT will be

I'll be bringing two folding camp chairs for my Canvas Condo and I don't care what that says about me as a man :)

I went over to the campsite this morning and:

shoveled out the parking area a bit...

set up my tent to make sure that nobody takes our spot...I doubt anyone else is stupid enough to go camping this weekend, but you can't be sure...

hid 3 ZS-geocaches just for this weekend...I have 3 GPSrs loaded with coords for those and some other geocaches...

brought over a metric crapton of firewood...

set up 3 thermometers around the site for bragging-right pictures...

There's plenty of parking, the snow varied between ankle and knee deep, and it's light and fluffy...no match for my uber-shovel...

I've got some pics to post later, but I'm heading over to Ben's school to help them run their Winter Carnival...

Parking and outhouses across from our campsites...

Parking spaces adjacent to our campsites...

There's a fireplace under that snow...

The deluxe outhouse...

Some firewood that I brought...

I cleared some of the snow away to set up my tent...

I set up my tent so that nobody would take our spot, although I highly doubt that anyone else is dumb enough to go camping this weekend...

We're supposed to get down to about -10 Friday night...see you guys tomorrow!

Well I'm home, showered and happy. Absolutely fantastic weekend in the 'dacks. Learned more than I care to type about at the moment.

Ended up with seven of all altogether, nobody in our party died and afaik nobody lost any digits or limbs. Good food and great company.

What else to tell? Campfires burned, lots of ammo expended at the "redneck range", best camping trip I've had since... well... since the last one :) Worst downer imo would be the intoxicated snowmobiler who tangled with a tree and lost somewhere up the road. All we saw was emergency vehicles coming in and out but the (super cool) forest ranger who stopped by the site and the range told is it was fatal.

I'll leave the glory talk to others (it got kinda cold friday night), I'm off to upload some pics which I will link to via editing this post, but I definitely want to extend infinite thanks to NFA for getting all this started and all his hard work (and all the Bad Medicine) and everybody else for showing up, the food, conversation, firetending, well, everything. I'm probably not the most social person on Earth but don't take my loner personality the wrong way, I'd bug out with any or all of you, anytime and anywhere (as sincere a compliment I can think of at the moment)

Rick aka Festus

The NFA Element was the only 4wd/awd on the site!!!
Image

Image

I loves me my 15 year old Wal-mart tent!
Image

Said Wal-mart tent looked like crap next to NFA's tho...
Image

NFA drove a pretty good pace on the snowy roads.
Image

Get Winterforce snow tires!
Image

Image

NFA's bionic snow shovel came in handy. These paths became nice and packed in time. Shoveling out walkways is a good investment for dryer pants and boots later on.
Image

Image

Image

Sam and Mouse were the only campers sharing a tent, and it seemed incredibly small compared to the others...
Image

Setting up
Image

Garmin will route you through all these side roads if it thinks it's a faster route. Never mind that the pavement on these roads doesn't see daylight between November and May... Thanks Garmin!
Image

A high end 4 season tent is a plus in winter camping but depending on the weather you might manage without one...
Image

This was more of a snowmobile trail than a road but even the guys with the half-bald summer tires did ok (I was impressed!)
Image

My digital camera stopped working when the thermometer dipped below zero.
Image

Nighttime fun
Image

No shortage of snow...
Image

Water freezes before you can finish it
Image

30F bag plus 45F bag= Not Enough (but I lived...)

I had a great time, froze my ass off, shot some guns, stared into the campfire for hours, ate lots better than I normally do while camping, drank some beers and booze (not before the shooting, of course), finally met some of the great ZSers that I have only met online before this weekend, talked about and tested lots of gear under severe conditions...and firmly fixed my insanity in the minds of many of my friends and family...

I've been getting ready and psyched for this weekend of camping for a long time, and it didn't disappoint! I'm grateful to the 6 who drove all the way up to the Northern New York for NNY08WCT, and sorry to have missed those who wanted to come but couldn't, for whatever reasons...we'll do this again...maybe in the dead of winter, but definitely in the gentler seasons of this beautiful area...

Anyway...on to the pictures...

Image

Festus was the first to arrive, and we spent some time setting up camp and gathering wood, and getting to know each other...

Image

The rest of the NNY08WCT crew arrived en masse, and we spent some time shaking hands, picking out tent spots, and talking about the weather and the drive (snowy...on both counts)...Famine may have been the first, but was certainly not the last, to generate a high quality snot-sicle...

Image

OutOfOrder2Day had to dig-in to make a spot for his tent (as did most of us)...it mostly varied between 1-2 feet deep...the initial footprint-hole is never big enough...

Image

CommonHighrise set up his tent over a layer of Balsam boughs, at the end of the trip, there was still powdery snow under his tent...

Image

CavemanSam and his roomate (not a ZS member, and I didn't want to post her name without permission) set up their tent

Image

Lotsa Booze...

Image

Testing out the dryer-lint firestarters...the ones that I made stink (because of all of the pet-hair) but worked very well at lighting a fire...

Image

I handed out bottles of "Bad Medicine" to each NNY08WCT attendee, and urged them to try out the magic formula...

Image

The reactions were immediate and positive...

Image

Festus Hagen had made and brought a metric crapton of chili, which we heated and ate in short order to help ward off the oncoming chill of the night...it was great!

Image

After (and to some degree, before) we hung out around the campfire, shooting the shit, drinking a bit, getting to know each other, and guessing about how cold the night would be...

Image

It was incredibly cold on Friday night, 17 below, by the nearby airport at Lake Clear, and on the thermometer in camp (which wasn't checked until after 7am, because I couldn't bear to get up before then)...

Image

A beer popped, but left mostly full (by the notorious sissy Famine) was frozen up and out of the can, and when it was chopped open with a hatchet (yup, that's how we roll), there was a can-shaped beer-sicle...

Image

Peppermint Schnapps, and some of the other lower proof beverages froze solid in the cold...

Image

Even the Ouzo, and some Jim Beam I brought along, partly froze in the night...

Image

It wasn't hard to tell whose camp this was, although when the Forest Ranger came by to check how we made it through the night (he had seen us the night before when he was on a call to deal with a snowmobile fatality a couple of miles away)...

Image

We spent a lot of the quiet and cold morning trying to rehydrate and warm up by the fire and stuff calories into hungry bodies...

Image

Caveman Sam wanted to make pancakes, and started - I swear - to make a spatula out of a branch...

Image

Mid-morning we heard a popping sound a little different than the popping the trees had been making all night in the extreme cold...it was a can of coke exploding...it sent coke shrapnel in all directions...

Image

Sam finished the spatula, and he and his roommate made some great pancakes that were greatly enjoyed...

Image

The spatula came into play again later, when we all enjoyed some steak, basted with "Bad Medicine"...it was actually really tasty on the steaks...

Image

After lunch, we went over to my redneck range, which some asshole had buried under 18 feet (well, 1.5 feet anyway) of snow...we improvised, adapted, and overcame the adversity to set up a range and shot at zombie targets and a bunch of $-store frying pans with a wide variety of firearms...

Image

We all got to try out each other's shinies, and a good time was had by all...

Image

We made lots of noise, and I got to fire an M1 (OutOfOrder2Day's) for the first time...

Image

I also had fun shooting Famine's side-by-side 20 gauge, which you can see Festus loading, appropriately happily...

Image

After the trip to the shooting range, we headed back to camp and got ready for the cold and dark to come back and make us their bitches again...we ate and drank lots more stuff in trying to get ready for the cold...

Image

Famine had to deal with "bean surprise"...the surprise was that the beans were frozen into an immovable block of beans...

Image

Once we were all essentially fed, we settled down to the serious business of trying to keep warm in the face of a thermometer that was dropping even more rapidly than the night before...

Image

Unfortunately, some socks got singed in the pursuit of warmth

Image

We all enjoyed some rabbit stew made by Caveman Sam and his roommate...it was hard to see through all of the smoke and steam generated by us, the food, and the fire...

Image

The night was cold, but not as cold as the one before, it was 4 below by the time we went to bed, but when I dragged my ass out of bed at a bit after 7am, it was already a touch above zero...my optimus stove (pimped out in gold rustoleum) performed like a champ the entire weekend, making cubic yards of snow into quarts of water...

Image

After cleanup had pretty much finished, and the first couple of people had left, Famine and CommonHighrise played a pickup game of Frozen-Totally-Solid-Egg Baseball, using a cane knife in place of the more traditional bat...

Image

After the eggball game, we four got together for the traditional end of NNY__WCT pants pulled down runaround picture...we noticed afterwards, with some sadness, that we had all been wearing long underwear...

Image

I lead the way out of the woods, and the four of us stopped at McD's for some fat and salt...the "restaurant" was really hot and really noisy inside, compared to what we had been enjoying for the last couple of days, but...it's good fat and salt...

I look forward to future camping outings with these and other people in this area, and at ZCON-08!!!

FYI, flatmate and I are safe and sound at home. We ended up making a pit stop at Cabela's gawking over the tent heaters we could have had. We also stuffed our faces at the first Cracker Barrel we came across.

Festus + NFA, thanks for posting pics. Thanks to everyone else who was stupid enough to suffer through negative 17 F with us.

Now I have to shower like there's no fricken tomarrow
