Zombie Apocalypse: what settings/locations come to mind.

Post by Zpocalypse_GBG » Tue Mar 27, 2012 10:46 am

So I'm trying to come up with good locations and settings for a zombie apocalypse. Settings could be cliche movie locations(the Mall, the hospitals, etc..) But I'd like to think of some unique, yet entertaining locations for a zombie board game.

My fiancee thought it would be a great to be trapped in the upper levels of a library. You can take out the stairs for protection and you have a near unlimited source of information at your fingertips. Then you can make raids for supplies.

I always thought it'd be awesome to live out the apocalypse in a Home Depot. Crazy defensive supplies. Seeds and dirt for growing food on the flat top of the building. Again, you can make raids for supplies.

Here's a couple of scenes I've used in my (hopefully soon-to-be-published) ZPOC novel:

Abandoned barn/farms: If you do it right, they're creepy as all hell. Rusting tractors, smashed-in doors and windows, big ol' barns that may or may not be full of zeds. The works.

Derelict ships: I've freaked MYSELF out writing a sequence about this. I used an empty fishing vessel, with just a few Z's on board while our hero/dipshitabouttogeteaten searches for something essential for survival. +10 scary factor if it is a) rusting, b) on choppy seas, and/or c) swaying on the waves in time with the moans of the dead.

Empty highways: I don't know why, but this makes me shiver thinking about it.

I work at a sand plant that is literally surounded 90% of the way by 200ft deep quarrys, I have often thought since I started here that with enough people to man the three roads coming in that it would make for a great safe haven from the undead. Not sure if it usable in you game but Ive always like the idea.

One of the creepy/cool things you find in the South are the old abandoned barns and houses in the more rural areas. Most of these have been taken over by kudzu and blend into the surrounding woods and fields. Also, (and this freaked out an ex-gf from CA), we have areas where the tree and plant growth are so thick you can't see the sky at night. Robert E. Howard used this in his short story "Pigeons from Hell."

How about a zoo? it could be a fun filled ZPAW local, you would have not only zombies but animals to deal with and maybe zombie animals too? Some animals could be friendly others hostile? I could see a lot of fun board game possibilities in ZPAW in a zoo and I don't remember hearing of any movies etc featuring a zoo so it would be a bit unique.

A movie studio lot could be interesting too. You could then have many different locals in one place. A wild west town, a 50s town, a sci fi set, etc Also your zombies could be dressed up in odd movie costumes. The prop dept could offer some fun choices of weapons.

You could go steam punk zombies, joining two fun counter cultures  and have a steam punk world that was infected with zombies.

Sesame Street ZPAW could be funny as hell. Or any other kids show world that has been over run by zombies. Mr Roger's ZPAW?

These are a few out of the box different ideas for ya. Personally I like the ZOO one the best as it seems the most interesting and "realistic". Though the Kid show world ZPAW does seem funny and fun.

An old museum ship like the USS ALABAMA....

Or, an old coastal fort like Ft. Morgan:

I want to see some zombie fights set in the past:
Zombies in medieval Japan or medieval Europe.
Zombies in an ancient Roman city.

But for modern times:
zombies in DisneyWorld
zombies in Washington DC
It can always get worse.

A Sportsmans Warehouse or Cabelas is where I would head in a ZPOC but that's not the question is it?
How about what sigboy40 came up with?
sigboy40 wrote:Roadside tourist attraction!

But make it something functional and fun like:
Image
Image
Image
An old fort like Bents Old Fort. Kit Carson held up here back in the day so why couldn't someone on the run in a ZPOC do the same?
Personally that is where I would head to since I am close by this particular fort because of the obvious reasons. It is a fort. I can defend my ground better here than I can elsewhere where I wouldn't have 4 walls from which I can patrol on top of and snipe any threats before they get close to my doors.

But I like the idea of a theme park too. That would definitly be a fun place to run around in, but I don't know. If it were a ZPOC there would be so many caverns and nooks from which they can spring from and catch me off guard, but then again, that means more nooks and crannys for me to spring out from to take one down.

Depends on how you look at it.

If you are in it for the fun value... hell yeah theme park!
If you are in it for defense and true survival... a fort is perfect (of course so are other places)
If you are in it for endless supplies and weapons and fun... A sportsmans warehouse or cabelas or bass pro shop LOL

Las Vegas might also be a fun place to run around killing zombies in.
Learning is an ongoing process.

The Olympic Games with some of the athletes turned into high performance zombies. A zombie Mark Bell would really suck bad. You could even plot line out the cause of the Z virus as performance enhancing drugs gone wrong. It would be much more believable to me than a military plot gone wrong.

Whoa....Didn't think of that. You wouldn't know anything was out of the ordinary until you got bit.

And even if you could make it back to where you parked your car, it will have probably been towed away by the city (yeah, it's happened to us a couple of times).

How about a cult place? No idea what they're called, but the locations where a cult gathers and lives together. I'm talking a cult of 100+ people. Then you have a source for new zombies, personality conflicts when the leader is killed, and overall a good back-drop for a zombie script.
