You know what I noticed? In all of the pictures in this thread, and in the linked thread, one thing seems sadly evident to me. These, our best, most highly-trained operators, out there in the real world risking their lives for us, are sadly under-equipped. Not one of them has been able to acquire even one piece of ACU/UCP gear! Why are stateside REMFs issued this newly-developed pattern, while the guys in combat have to make do with ancient 3-color DCUs or even buy their own, obviously inferior MultiCam, or should I say Airsoftpat, which we all know isn't any good in real combat and is just for fanboys. Won't someone make sure our best troops get the latest gear?

(I know some of the pics linked to in militaryphotos.net predate ACU, but not most of them.)

The ACU is the WORST camo ever. It lights you up like a pop-up target on a KD Range! My guys usually only wear them in Garrison.

I am sorry but you are hopelessly incorrect. The medics are not important. The real two important things SF guys have are beards and a steely gaze. This seems quite evident if you study the pictures closely.

The blue means sarcasm. I hate ACU, too.

I've seen it work okay in some environments, like inside a well-lit store, but I've never seen it excel. MultiCam, IMHO, is the best "universal" camo I've seen, but any of the region-specific patterns like BDU/DCU/MARPAT are going to kick ass in their intended AO.

I'm glad you said that but here's a question for you or anyone else that wants to take a guess at it!:

"What are the two assets that an SF Detachment has that no one else does, that is almost GUARANTEED to establish immediate rapport with an indigenous people or a G force?"

You other SF types can't play! Give it some thought and let me know what your answer is!

This is a joke, right Jeriah? Or a quote from someone else, jokingly posted here?

There has only been one environment I've seen ACU work, and that was a couch...

Stateside REMF's can keep the ACU, they have need of nothing better...

That's what they say about us, too.

Seriously, why does anyone expect another country to be on "our" side, any more than they should expect us to be on their side? The leadership of any nation is going to to what's best for their own nation, if it's a good leader, or for their own family, ethnic group, or faction, if it's a shitty leader. NATO countries aren't "on our side," they're on their own side, which happens to dovetail nicely with our side.

Individuals in a country are going to look out for their own self-interest. If they can be persuaded that victory of one side over another will be in their best interest, they may support that side. If not, they can be persuaded by payment or other incentives, but this is less ideal since they'll just be working for pay, not victory.

This is why, by the way, I am in favor of avoiding civilian casualties by any means necessary, tight ROE, humane treatment of captives, etc. (I mean, besides general human decency.) If we take a casual attitude about, "Well, he shouldn't have been standing next to my target," we're not doing a good job of convincing the locals that an American victory is in their best interest. Any time a squad of American teenage shitheads, unfit to wear a uniform but doing so anyway, break into a house and rape a local girl (it happens from time to time), they turn that entire village against us. They're recruiting for the enemy, and should be prosecuted as such.

Well, that was an unexpected rant. Oh well.

TL;DR - Probably off topic of the thread.

I didn't intend it as political, and don't believe that it was. The topic of Afghans fighting for money and nothing else, and not "being on our side," came up, and that was my reply. No politics was intended nor, I felt, actualized. Sorry if it came off as political, again, that's not how I intended it, nor how it sounds to me.

It was, however, off the topic, so we can all return to the topic of beards and video games now.

Edit to add: P.S. Happy birthday! Shouldn't you have the day off?

CENTCOM wasted no time establishing a new rule forcing males to grow beards.

Commander Gen. James E. Mattis issued a statement to all troops in combat zones.

“The time has come for the Armed Forces to accept the facts, and the facts are that beards save lives. All this time it was speculated that Green Berets were better because of their superior and intensive training while in fact, most of it had to do with beards.”

There’s no doubt that many in the Special Forces community will be angered, but General Mattis is convinced.

“It’s settled science. In light of this information we will enforce a rule requiring all males to wear at least one inch of facial hair at all times. Furthermore, any females able to grow facial hair are encouraged to do so as well.”
