Looking for a Camp/Bush Knife

Postby MidRange » Sun Apr 29, 2012 6:05 am

I'm looking for a good camp knife but I'm having troubles finding one to fit my needs

>$60
Hi Carbon Steel Preferred
Fixed blade

I would really like a custom/non-mass produced, but its not really in my price range

Thanks, I think that's going to be the one (for now).

Only negative thing I would say on the Schrade SCHF9 is, the part of the blade that is inwardly curved, is harder to sharpen... Or at least requires a different method than is common. I use sand paper, wrapped around a pipe to sharpen the concave part (well, the whole thing really) of my spartan.

Here is an idea for ya!

George makes some amazing blades and perhaps since you are having a hard time finding one that would fit your needs maybe you can design one that you think would suit your needs perfectly and have a chance at winning the opportunity of him making it for you, plus the other two prizes he is giving away. And if you don't want to do that, you can probably still design one of your liking and George can make it for you. He has some skills.

check him out!

Mora. It's the G19 of bushcraft, only more people like the way it feels.

I was wondering why it was even a question anymore. On a budget? Need the best knife for the price? Mora. Either get one from amazon or visit ragweed forge. http://www.ragweedforge.com/

For $60 there are more versatile knives out there, than mora... Not saying mora isn't perfect for what it is made for, and underpriced... Then again, a mora (or two) and a decent hatchet/axe/machete can be had for that price

I'm chalking up another vote for the Mora. That thing still surprises me  I wouldn't want to baton with it (though I've seen videos of people who do with pleasing results) but for anything else you'd need in a camp/bush knife, it'd do the job.

We all know I will say Mora ... so, to be different, a recent anecdote:

Tried some new knife sharpening techniques yesterday - namely sharpening with sandpaper and then stropping with different materials I had around the house (old belt, paper pad back, with compound, without compound... etc). After a morning spent messing around with different knives and different grits of sand paper and then stropping with different materials, which knife is the sharpest one and goes through paper like fire through butter or scares hairs off my arm? My Mora, the red handled one, been using it for over 3 years now.

That scandi edge being more accute & wider is gereally gonna make it easier to sharpen, but harder to keep at a true flat scandi grind... And the more you sharpen it (without taking care to keep the flat edge), the more it sort of "turns into" a primary/secondary type edge, as the part that becomes less accute (due to stropping & the like) gets wider... Or it becomes some kind of convex/scandi hybrid.

2 of the knives I sharpened were Scandis, kept them pretty flat as the sandpaper was backed by a cedar block I had. Keptit pretty flat.

I've yet to see one in the flesh (well, steel) but you might want to consider the new Mora Robust when it becomes available in your area...

Doesnt fit the non mass produded criteria but Ontario has added 5160 to there spec+ line I have had 1 with a 7inch blade for a few months now, sheath sucks but the knife itself is tough and holds the edge well for well under 100$

Well to be completely different. I went yard sale shopping and also looking through my mother's and grand mother's cooking items. I found grand mom's Old Hickory 8 inch slicing knife, a 3 and 1/2 inch paring knife, Bought a 7 inch butcher knife and a cleaver. All are the Ontairo Old Hickory band not the newer (2005 maybe) Taylor Old hickory brand. All are 1095 cabon steel about 1/8 inch thick. I been thinking of making new handle for then and have a matched pair in a kydex sheath. Like paring knife and cleaver , or paring knife and butcher knife.

Total spent on knives >$20.
First Double Tap then repeat as Necessary.

Mora robust, $15.

Condor Kumunga, $40.

I'm a big fan of having one small knife, one big knife to cover my bases. The big knife could easily be replaced by a hatchet or machete though.

One of my favorite knives I own is the Kabar heavy bowie. You can pick one up for right at $60.

Mora knives are very good knives and very cheap (two things which aren't generaly found together) their downside is they're not full tang construction.

Not as much a downside as most people think. Scrapyard knives aren't full tang either. What it comes down to is that bad technique and poorly made knives with welded on tangs have given hidden, tapered, and stick/rat-tail tangs a bad name. A Mora-sized knife isn't a chisel, a hammer, a crowbar, an axe, or a machete. You can baton with it, but you have to make sure you're doing it right and aren't trying to baton a small tree.
