Rothco Opinions??

Postby DocZ » Sun Mar 04, 2012 11:47 pm

Hey all. I recently went into a new Army/Navy Store near where i live and i was browsing through the aisles and saw a lot of stuff that were being sold for really cheap prices. I took a look at the manufacturer and they are made by Rothco. Any opinions out there about their products? Thanks.

Yep Rothco blows. If you are going on the cheap, stick to GI Issued surplus- used surplus gear is better than brand new crap knockoffs any day.

Do you happen to have any links to good stores by any chance? It would be much appreciated. :D

If you're looking for cheap surplus gear, go here: http://wardenssupplyco.com/cart/index.php
They're the BEST surplus webstore out there for US surplus at great prices. I've ordered from them at least 5 times, always fast and always the best price.

What are you looking for specifically? Web gear for a rifle setup? Surplus camping shit?

Not my thread, but I just wanted to pop in and give thanks to you guys who know your brands/products. I almost dropped (small) coin on some Rothco paracord for my bag. I'll just use my gift card for...I dunno...a lawn flamingo or something instead.

It's admittedly hard to fuck up Paracord- Rothco paracord is probably OK as long as you're not going to use it for emergency climbing or whatever- it's probably still paracord, and they may even make it to military spec- unlike their clothing and everything else, which is substandard.

For Paracords, Supply Captain is the best. I live 30 mins away from them in Marlboro NY. Top notch equipment and they gave me a small tour of the warehouse. You cant go in unless you have Military/Law Enforcement background, and they do ask for ID at the door. :D

Back when I was young and foolish, I bought some of their boots. They basically disintegrated internally, lace grommets snapped off, nylon started fraying. I was wearing them to high school and cleaned movie theaters in them, that's how intense my demands were. I've heard good things about some of their cheaper satchels, they apparently made Jack Bauer's bag or at least have a solid replica of it.

Know what you're buying, if you have to really rely on a piece of gear I wouldn't choose Rothco.

I had some of their black jungle boots when I was in between issue pairs. Managed to split the leather sides (never done that in an issue pair) and wore the tread down flat within a year (takes me three years to do that in issue boots). Usually the cheapest I'll go is Tru-Spec/Atlanco. Their stuff is decent, but I'd say their nylon stuff is a touch below SDS and their BDU are usually okay, but clothing sizes run a bit wonky compared to Propper Intl. and definitely snug compared to issue BDUs.

I agree, I got some Rothco Paracord on Amazon, it's fine for boot laces or tying stuff together on your gear. I'm actually curious has to which brands make true mil spec 550. There's a lot of misleading BS out there.

If we're talking field jackets look for Alpha brand. IMO.

Dont be so sure about that..i have rothco paracord with only six strands in it. I only noticed because it was noticeably "floppier" than the legit stuff i have
