Tough Mudder- Boots or Five Fingers?

Post by jeepgunman » Wed Feb 15, 2012 7:52 pm

Ok so Im doing my 1st tough mudder in april. The question I have is should I wear my five fingers or my combat hikers??? I wear my five fingers all the time while running but I dont think they would stand up to a tough mudder. My Danner combat hikers , I think they would be best but I would hate to mess up a $300 pair of boots. Ive thought about wearing an old pair of sneakers, but they might peal off feet durring the course. Another option could be a pair of jungle boots.

Any suggestions???

From the Tough Mudder website:
Shoes: normal running shoes. Football or rugby boots won’t help–they’ll harm the other participants and can damage parts of the courses.
Short answer – wear normal running shoes and warm but light clothing, plus gloves and a swim cap.

five fingers. I did a race like this and about 100yards in my boots weighed about 15lbs. Barefoot was significantly faster and more pleasant.

I wore my salomon techamphibians, they worked waaaay better than any of my friends shoes. And they even came clean afterwards. Also highly recommended for kayaking.

I did 3 big mud runs last year all of them in five fingers. It's the only way to go! Just Velcro them on tight! I was afraid I'd lose one in a few deep mud holes!

I'll be doing a Spartan Sprint in March in my Vibrams. I'll let you know how well they worked for me.

I gotta ask (having never worn a pair) but don't those five fingers material between your toes bother you? Hell it annoys me just to wear flip flops.

Flip flops are held on by the thing between your toes, the five fingers aren't supported by your toes.

OK, maybe I should have made myself a little clearer. It's not the support system I was asking about - it was whether having anything between your toes (the material of the footgear in this case) isn't bothersome.

It never bothered me, but it was noticeable at first. It also formed some very light blisters between my toes. Not enough to cause pain, just a layer or two of skin getting friction for the first time. Nothing you can't get past if you like them otherwise, I think.

I never had an issue. It was a little weird at first, but I quickly got used to it. I once tried on a pair of glove socks and those annoyed the shit out of me. The Five Fingers have such thin material there, that it isn't bothersome after the initial wtf moment.

I understand that they want you to wear sneakers so no one gets hurt and everything. But if I was doing something like this in "real" situation the last thing I would want to wear is a pair of sneakers! However, I guess sneakers it is.

A pair of jungle boots would be pretty good.

I did 3 mud run/ obstacle races for big competing companies. You will see a lot of five fingers, and if you have KSO's (mine are the trail ones with a thicker sole) you will be happy. Barefoot isn't safe and running shoues will be ruined, not to mention heavy and uncomfortable. I was waist deep in thick clay based PNW mud and happy as a clam!

Why ask us? If you are conditioned with vibrams, wear them. If you can't do it, don't. And I stress DON'T. Personally, I wouldn't want to ruin my day because I came down off a wall hard and a pointy rock hit the heel of my foot.

VFFs all the way. Mud clings to shoes and makes them heavier, so use the lightest shoes you're comfortable with. I've never run a mudder but I've run long distances on some very sloppy trails and I know what a difference even a moderate amount of mud stuck to your shoes can make. I think sneakers or any sort of traditional running shoe will be uncomfortably heavy and boots would be nearly unbearable. Since you're used to running with VFFs stick with VFFs.

I wonder if Chuck Taylor high tops would be good? Better than barefoot anyway..

The canvas wouldn't do well with all the water. They'd be a lot heavier than a synthetic shoe of any sort

Having done just that in my KSOs I can say that it does suck. I still wouldn't -not- run in my VFFs because squishy platform running shoes suck a lot more.

Vibrams generally suck for TM because they don't supply enough grip in the mud.

Running shoes don't supply shit for grip in the mud either. I'm thinking the VFF's have one up in that department though, as I haven't busted my ass while wearing them (yet). 10 days and a wake up and I'll know for sure.
